Enjoying some free time i decided to rebuild an old PC i have to play some classic games.
But no matter what i do i can't make it work reliably.
These are the (current) specs:
AMD Atlhon XP 1700+ Thoroughbred-B @ 2ghz (100 x 20) @ 1.75v
Asus A7V133 (Via KT133A/686B) Rev 1.05 (NO DOT)
Voodoo 3 3000 PCI 16mb
Creative Sound Blaster Ensoniq AudioPCI (CT4810)
384mb PC133 (two sticks 256 + 128) @ 133mhz CAS 3
Samsung 40gb 7200RPM IDE
I have installed Windows XP SP3 to test a few things first, but everything i do causes random CRC errors when decompressing archives or installing games / software or whatever.
Btw, during XP installation several files gave errors during copy, but when i hit retry it "worked" and moved on.
My first tought was that the memory or cpu was having issues, so i ran MEMTEST86+ through Hiren´s Boot CD and it passed without errors. Next i tried prime95 in both small and blend tests, and it ran fine for about an hour or so ( i didn´t tried for longer).
Then i tried different bioses/settings (tried 1009, 1010 beta and 1010 beta from braziliantech), swapped the power supply, and different IDE controller and drivers (tried the via controller and promise controller afterwards).
Tried an AGP card alone (VANTA LT) without any other PCI cards, but no luck... Same issues!
I even tried removing / changing memory sticks (tried with the 128mb stick only, in different slots), changing the fsb/multiplier settings (133x11 = 1.46ghz) and nothing worked.
At 133mhz FSB it is even worse, it gives memory errors in MEMTEST86, so i reverted back to 100mhz FSB.
I´m out of ideas... Could it be an motherboard issue?? Looking through old posts i found that the KT133A + 686B had an IDE corruption issue, that seens to have been fixed in newer drivers/bioses, but im not sure its the same issue here.
