X2 with Buran soundbank sounds really pleasant to my ears on everything I've tried . I have a SAM9733 based 4MB GS monster MIDI and, IMHO, the X2 blows it away .

I still like my SC-88's specific character in Duke Nukem 3D too much to do that, but I definitely see your point .

AFAICT, Dream' 5000 series (of which there are higher end members than the SAM5504B in the X2/X3) is seeing use in digital pianos, MidiPlus products and MIDI keyboards from various manufacturers (some of them apparently well-known ones) .

This makes me wonder about 2 things .

a) Are there commercial sound banks better/bigger than the stock 16MB one for the X2/X3 that could work with the SAM5504B ? If so, can they be purchased ?
b) Who else uses chips from Dream ICs in their products ? Are the likes of Casio, Yamaha and other big names doing so without disclosing it ?

I'm a little behind on whats been going on with the X2/X3 banks, if I understand correctly the new Buran bank allows the X2 to be fully MT-32 compatible?
Does this mean the GUD bank is obsolete now as it's only General Midi compatible, where as the Buran is both MT-32 and GM mapped?

yes the newest buran bank is also 'MT32' compatible ---> only standard mapping though, it is not a complete MT-32 emulation

I was feeling experimental, so here's the DreamBlaster X2 connected to the MSX MIDI-PAC2 using the game Undeadline. MIDI-PAC2 is a device that intercepts MSX PSG and FM data and then generates and outputs a MIDI file in real time. Allowing the user to have MIDI music in games that have no MIDI support at all.
