Installing DirectX9 seems to have killed my ATi TV-WONDER. The video is skewed at 165 degrees or so, impossible to see. Kinda reminds me of Macrovision, except it happens on Coax and S-Video, so it's weird. ATi's site decided to go down when I was downloading the drivers to reinstall them.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Installed dx9 with my GeForce4 Ti4200. Ran 3DMark2001SE b330
to check that everything was ok.

Got a 1% speed increase ... Geeezzzz ....

Well at least for those GeForce4 users there is no real rush to
upgrade if you do not feel like it. Else, so far so "good" .

Well, the MAIN idea isn't really to have a speed increase. Rather, it adds new capabilities.

Yes, it’s my fault.

So what's the verdict with the official DirectX 9.0a release? Is it stable? Will it screw up DOS games with VDMSound?

Is that an upgrade or is that the original DX9? It's really a crap shoot. Some people find it fucks their stuff up, some don't.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Unknown. Your best bet is to create a "restore point", install DX9a, test numerous DOS titles, then restore if you still don't feel comfortable with it.

Thanks Nicht. That's exactly what I was thinking I'd have to do. Kind of a bummer because I'd have to take the time to do a bunch of testing before installing other stuff that would get wiped by rolling back to the restore point.

Any ideas of what specific problems people have been reporting DX9 to cause? It would help to know what to look for.

DOS games stop working.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Um...okay...Thanks Snover but that's not specific enough *lol*. Do they crash with some specific error? Does the sound not work? What does "stop working" mean *exactly*? This is the same issue I have with people not putting comments in the DosBox compatibility database *sigh*

What? Your message is breaking up! Please repeat in english 😜

I've seen DX9 uninstallers, but they're not made by Microsoft, so I don't think I'd trust them to not make a mess of my system (WinXP SP1). I'll just make a restore point and do lots of testing. No big deal I guess.

Oddly enough, the only tool I found that claims to remove DirectX 9 is only for XP/.NET:
http://www.3dcenter.de/downloads/directx-dx9uninstaller.php

As I understand it, rollback only applies to drivers and the like. Restore points are much more like an auto-backup system such as the "GoBack" system from Roxio.

If you use something like GoBack or image your drive with a tool like Norton's Ghost, those are alternative ways to "test" a DirectX install.

In any case, I haven't heard any bad news about DX9 when it comes to Win9x.

I don't know if I have already, but I should mention that I'm using WinXP + SP1, and I play DOS games using VDMSound (and some with DosBox now that 0.58 is out)
