I've been working on our old farm 386's recently, got the main one almost completely cleaned up after sitting in a shop for the last 15-20 years. Changes I've made don't pertain I don't think
(wiped drive after archiving proprietary local to me software "hard disk manager", added an Adlib 8 bit from 1990, an official one, and upgraded to 8mb of dram and 128kb cache with 32kx8 tag)
I swear when I was younger I could hear the sound fx in XCOM without a soundcard (from the pc speaker) and the music through the adlib. This wouldn't be an issue if the sound cues weren't so important in this game (doors opening, alien death noises to ensure you won't get stabbed in the back by a chryssalid, etc)
The manual I have still also states that the game does support a pc speaker so it's throwing me off.
Am I just forgetting something or am I flat out wrong?
As an aside I did purchase a CT2940 as a replacement, although I've always preferred the Adlib sounds. Will the SB16 work in FM mode to give that range of music? I prefer it over the newer stuff.
