Ok I installed a 5200 Ultra in my current nforce2 Win98 setup and installed driver 45.23. Connected to VGA. On first start-up with the driver, I have a maximum resolution of 1920x1080. So I went in and unchecked the detect PNP monitor box and rebooted. After reboot I now have a maximum resolution of 2048x1536 and one step below that is 1920x1440. The monitor won't display 2048x1536 but 1920x1440 does work. This also brings in 1600x1200 which my monitor doesn't define as supported in its EDID for some crazy reason.

My monitor is a BenQ BL3200PT which is a 1440p panel.

Something you could try is removing the EDID pin from a VGA cable and seeing what kind of behavior that brings.

Thanks, swaaye. Tested again on mine, followed the exact same steps as you, but... same result. Seems that newer nVIDIA drivers really hate my AOC Q3279VWFD8 monitor. Somehow they don't want to let go of the 1920x1080 max resolution, even when disabling automatic plug & play monitor detection.

Good idea, will definitly try it, since I have a lot of VGA cables lying around.

I've coated the EDID pin on a cable in the past with some clear nail polish it worked great and I didn't have to ruin a good cable. You just need to clean the pin with some acetone when your done quick and easy.

I've just tested it, and nail polish actually worked like a charm. I can finally use 1600 x 1200 with driver 4x.xx and newer! 😁

Since now I know for sure that it works, I will go ahead and destroy one of my many VGA cables by removing the EDID pin (nail polish is nice for testing purposes, but since I constantly test systems/video cards, it might peel off eventually & get stuck inside a video card connector (which, of course, will surely be an expensive/rare video card 😁 ).

Good to hear. That seems like a great way to bypass all the VGA EDID problems.
