Greetings everyone,

I'd like to know that what's the maximum/highest-grade AGP card that I could use for my mainboard (supports AGP 8X) having the following specs;

https://www.cnet.com/products/asus-p4v800-x-m … cket-478-pt800/

For instance, a "HIS ATI Radeon HD4670 IceQ - DDR3 (1 GB)" AGP card work with that?

Or an "Axle Nvidia 6200A 512MB 64BIT DDR2 (directx 9) DVI Agp 8X"?

OS: Windows 98 SE

Thanks!

Highest you can go with drivers for 98SE in an AGP slot are:
NVidia - GeForce 7950GT - good luck finding one for a sane price.
ATI Radeon X850XT PE .. cheaper than the 7950GT but generally still priced high.

Best for 98SE game compatibility-wise:
Geforce FX 5950 Ultra.

Thanks a lot, cyclone3d, for your prompt reply, truly useful info!

Actually I'll be running Adobe Premiere, Discreet 3ds Max and Poser, video editing and 3D modelling softwares. So what chipset would you suggest, ATI/Radeon or Nvidia, for such purpose of usage?

Thanks once again.

What versions of those pieces of software?

I'm not sure of they supported any time of GPU acceleration back then. Would have to look at the recommended specs for them and see what they say.

I actually have just checked for that, none of them supports GPU-accel it seems. (3ds Max 5.1 , Premiere 5.0). So, CPU matters most, it seems. It's P IV 1.8 Ghz - 512KB Cache.

I think I'll look for Geforce FX 5950 Ultra, for mostly gaming.

Thanks a lot!

You'll probably want to upgrade the CPU as well.

That board should be able to take any of the Pentium 4 CPUs with the 800Mhz fsb. A lot of the not quite fastest ones can be had for very cheap.
Have a look here:

Depending on the CPU cooler, you might have to upgrade that as well.

I would personally recommend the Pentium 4 HT 2.8C, 2.6C or 2.4C northwood processors, unless you want the fastest thing you can get just because. Prescott CPUs run really hot and don't perform better than northwood in any applications you are likely to use in a windows 98 gaming rig.

Actually Windows 98SE creates troubles with a CPU higher freq. than 1.8, no? That was my reason not trying a better CPU. (For Windows 98SE+its DOS)

Am I wrong?

Windows 98 has lots of weird edge case bugs. It is, frankly, a terrible OS. I haven't heard about 1.8ghz specifically being the magic number, but I have read about other bugs with much slower processors.

I used a 3.0 ghz model on a very similar motherboard and it worked quite well for me.

I am of the opinion that the occasional, non repeatable crash in windows 98 is a normal part of the experience no matter what hardware you use 😀.

I have a couple different Win98SE systems running faster-ish CPUs.

One is an industrial Socket 478 with a 3.2Ghz Pentium 4 Extreme.

Another is a Core2 Duo x6800 running at 3.3Ghz.

Both seem to work fine.

You just need to install a max of 512MB RAM.
