Hi,
I have a 12MB 3dfx Voodoo2 - the Creative CT6670 version. I am testing the card for the first time.

I installed it in the pci slot, copied the .OVL driver from its original Creative CD into a folder which I then added to the path environment variable

I downloaded the GTA 3dfx DEMO from here https://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/grand-theft-auto/ and then I deleted the OVL included in the game folder to make sure that the one from the Creative CD is used

But when I start it, the 3dfx logo is already reproduced at 1-2fps, if I wait for the end and let the game start, the fps are those. It is completely unusable.

The computer is an IBM 300GL 6282
Pentium MMX 233mhz
64mb SDRAM
DOS 6.22

On the compatibility matrix, the game is out of box compatible Voodoo 2 DOS Glide compatibility matrix

Did you try it with the original OVL file? If a game is out of the box compatible with a Voodoo 2, you shouldn't need to change anything.

You must use a GLIDE2X.OVL file from an older Voodoo2 driver since the ones that comes on the recent drivers has compatibility issues. Also it seems that a patch is required but you are using the demo version of the games.

The GLIDE2X.OVL file included on games are usually meant for Voodoo Graphics.

With the original OVL the card is not recognized, the game stopped at a "Select your Voodoo" screen without giving me the option to select the card.

What do you mean for "The GLIDE2X.OVL file included on games are usually meant for Voodoo Graphics."?

The original OVL file that comes with the game may not work on the Voodoo2 because that card was released when DOS was going out of mainstream support.

Voodoo Graphics = Voodoo 1 like most users here say.

Well, I'm going to download the demo and test it on my old computer and let you know.

Downloaded the demo and deleted the GLIDE2X.OVL from the game directory and it worked flawlessly.

Note that I disabled the 3Dfx splash screen through an environment variable (FX_GLIDE_NO_SPLASH) and the GLIDE2X.OVL file that I'm using for DOS dates from Apr 3rd 1998 and comes from an early reference driver (1.2.50).

I tried with the version 1.2.50 but is still unplayable...

The FPS has increased slightly but it will be 5fps ...

Am I CPU limited?

No, that 233 mmx can run the game easily.

I have a similar rig but I've never tried running the game under pure DOS. I run the DOS version under Window 95C. No problems.

Is this too much voodoo?

I recall it running pretty decently for me under DOS with a P200 non-MMX and Voodoo 1.

Unlikely. I just tried the 3DFX GTA demo that you linked on my Pentium MMX 166 + Voodoo1 system and it ran fine.

I used the OVL file that was included with the game.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

No. Seems that the problem is something else with your computer. Does other DOS Glide games works fine on that computer?

Using the OVL included with GTA with Voodoo2 will get you a "What 3dfx card?" on the screen.

BTW, 64MB DDR RAM? Should be SDRAM in this case.

I have the same message with the included OVL

Yes SDRAM 😅
