I distinctly remember ESNES being the slowest - their early soundless releases had no assembly! Later on that became NLKE and had very slow transparency emulation.
Could have been a code optimization weirdness or something IIRC. I ran it on a 486 and that was their sorta bragging thing about the early no sound thing. Lol. ZSNES and SNES9X felt slower at that time, but that was just as people started making SNES emulators (1999-2001ish).
These days Zsnes is what I prefer, in windows and dos. It's glacially slow once the ROM starts but not unplayable. It managed Mario RPG just over slideshow, 🤣. I thought about maybe doing some YouTube videos on DOS emulation for #doscember this year if I can find the time to edit it together.
