Thank you, I appreciate the insightful response.

I plan to install 32MB EDO ram in one machine and 16MB each in the other two.

They’re really just my own ultimate 486 builds based on different chipsets. I do realize that it’s overkill for a 486 but I’m enjoying the experience of messing with them.

Now if I can just get my hands on a Cyrix 5x86 😅

Cyrix 5x86 are not hard to come by. Unless you're after the infamous 133Mhz version.

Visit my AmiBay items for sale (updated: 2025-03-14). I also take requests 😉

I cannot find any decent 486 components locally so I rely on sites like eBay and always have to include worldwide shipping because I live very far from most sellers.

Have you checked the prices of a Cyrix 5x86 CPU's on there recently? The 100GP averages around $60 - 100 excluding worldwide shipping, which is way more than what I'm willing to pay for such an old CPU, which isn't even the top of its line.
I would consider $30-40, but even that is quite steep in my view.

Okay, I managed to get a Cyrix 5x86 100GP for $32 shipped.
I suppose that's okay.
Certainly happy to have one in my collection.

EDO? The GA-5486AL is one of the very few 486 boards that supports it, but the GA-486AM/s explicitly only supports fast page DRAM.

Basic rule with 486: if the manual explicitly states EDO it *might* work assuming correct board revision and BIOS, if not almost certainly not.

Thank you, I assumed it would just work on late 486 boards.

The EDO ram hasn't arrived yet so I haven't been able to test.

If it doesn't work on the 486AM board, I do have enough FPM memory to install 32MB so it's still okay.
