In the W98 DOS mode, audio also works with nForce (3 250 at least), but only as an SB16 emulation with SB Live! and Audigy. With VIA chipsets, of course, the possibilities are more diverse.

I can't recall the exact Nforce chipset I tried, nor the specifics but I didn't have all of the full working DOS sound with an SB Live while in Windows. With the VIA board I have SB16 PCM, adlib though not great sounding, and MPU401. I also have a Vortex 2 card installed and can switch the DOS window MIDI output between any device I want so I have multiple synth options, Soundfonts, as well as external support as well.

Thank you for the information. Yes, this makes sense. Having lots of power is tempting, but I had not thought for a second about the potential drawbacks such a system might bring. I was just "blinded" by the outlook of the power. But after a second thought, I would be way better off with a Socket 754 AGP board. I will look into them and pull the trigger on one of them while they are still affordable, like you say.

Are Via and Nforce chipsets alright or should I prefer one of the other ? what is your take on that?

For Win98, I'd avoid Nforce. They don't work for DOS audio which I use for late DOS SVGA 640x480 games maxed out. Via are normally compatible.

Ok that is valid info. My main usage is going to be 80 per win 98es gaming but it is not out the table that I will ge deeper into dos gaming at some point. Having a board that is good with does audio would be a big advantage.

I think I will pull the trigger soon for a ASUS K8V-X mainboard. It costs almost nothing has a recommended via chipset. The VIA K8T800

I have the SE version of that board in my current rig and it's been solid. I also recommend looking for a "Cool n' Quiet" Athlon 64, I have a 3200+ in mine. It allows downclocking the multiplier down to 5x for mine. That might allow some games to run if the stock speed is too fast.

Good to see that the thread has grown in my absendence. I do not mind @predator. Just keep discussing.

Nontheless can we move back the original question. I am about the pull the trigger very soon. Besides the already mentioned winfast 760gxk8mb board i also have the change to get another board for only 5 euro more. The Gigabyte K8VM800MAE.

If you are in the position to chose between sis 760 and Via chipsets which one would you pick?

Thanks for the info. Sounds good. I will pull the trigger for that board as soon as possible. Also, thank you a lot for your CPU recommendation.
