Keep in mind that umbpci cannot enable the monochrome region as umb. Only C000-FFFF region is permitted, and b000 is outside that.

Again, if actual ram was there, it could be turned on with hiram.sys, but *NOTHING* is there on a modern rig.

It needs EMM386 or similar to map it in.

OK, many thanks for amazing responses to my original thread. I have a new build, and I have completely forgone Phil's Computer Lab MS-DOS 7.1 menu:

I have a clean, pristine config.sys and autoexec.bat

Would it be too much to ask if you kindly write a very minimal that allow 618KB+ conventional memory for my system?
I have TWO optical drives, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS.

The user CRVS has a minimal one that works posted here:
Re: Installing DOS drivers on an Audigy2 ZS

But I am having trouble getting it to work.

Many thanks in advance!

Use JEMMEX instead of HIMEM+EMM386, and don't look back.

World's foremost 486 enjoyer.

Again, the devil is in the details, and I need to see your 1mb memory map with no managers/drivers loaded, so I can give includes/excludes.

Jemmex does a decent job, but is not bulletproof.
