It is a good practice to leave room between cards for air flow and it makes servicing the machine easier plus it looks better 😉
In the end though we always run out of slots :s

Disagree - every slot occupied looks way better! 🤣

Is it true that the AGP slot and the PCI slot next to it share an IRQ? I read that somewhere on Vogons. Either way, I put a V3 PCI next to whatever AGP card is installed.

Some boards do force this. That's why I always start installing pci cards in the second slot. My SOYO 7VDA Socket 370 board was like this. Now it's just habit.

Dell Dimension XPS R400, 512MB SDRAM, Voodoo3 2000 AGP, Turtle Beach Montego, ESS Audiodrive 1869f ISA, Dreamblaster Synth S1
Dell GH192, P4 3.4 (Northwood), 4GB Dual Channel DDR, ATI Radeon x1650PRO 512MB, Audigy 2ZS, Alacritech 2000 Network Accelerator

Nope. OEM desktops usually only have 3 slots anyway. 😀
