So it is fairly safe? I was wondering whether I need to put a heatsink on the 440BX' Northbridge.

Most BX boards already came with a heatsink on the northbridge. Green was the favorite color of those days, those heatsinks looked remarkably familiar to the ones often found on Cyrix 5x86's and some graphics cards like i740 and some SiS ones I think?
