Exactly, it's easiest to use a bootloader which can cloak partitions. I'd much rather just cold swap drives than mess around with that.
All hail the Great Capacitor Brand Finder

Actually what I do is generally using separate HDDs if possible, and at least definitely separate partitions. I actually never thought about them as being a nuisance. With the right tools (masterbooter package for example, it has a very simple and nice partitioning utility, besides being a very good multibooting software) it's very easy and hassle free.
I have a 250gb Hard drive with XP/Ubuntu/SteamOS installed into different partitions. They all access a 1.5TB Partition formated with exFAT they all share with Windows 10, while XP and 10 also have access to dual 2TB hard drives
I am pretty sure my opinions are in line with most everyones. Some of these computers could run newer OS's but not for gaming. Computer 3 is the hardest one to place because frankly it's not quite enough in my opinion for late Windows 98 gaming but definitely not enough for Windows XP gaming.
Computer 1 DOS\WIN 3.1
Computer 2 Windows 98 SE or 2000 Depending on what software you want to run.
Computer 3 Windows 98 SE or ME.
Computer 4 Definitely Windows XP
Computer 5 Definitely Windows XP
Computer 6 Windows 95C.
Pretty much agree.
1. the 486 with 8MB sits smack bang in the middle of the DOS / Win3 era, or a crappy Win95 at most.
2, 3. 512MB screams Win98/ME
4, 5. XP to whatever, would also handle Linux smoothly.
6. High performance DOS Voodoo gamestation
A bit late, but I'd list it like this:
1. DOS ( +Win3.11 if you want to for whatever reason)
2. ME (or 98SE if you want a 98SE rig and make #6 a 95 rig)
3. ME
4. XP SP2
5. Not sure, I tend to move towards XP SP3 or 7
6. 95 or 98SE
