Try the game in real DOS and see if it exhibits the same probs?

Hmmm, if SoundFX doesn't work well either then it's very likely a game/Windows problem (like some other games, e.g. MoM, U8, etc.) Since the floppy version is relatively decent, you may try to find it on various abandonware sites (if you can't then e-mail me), and attempt a file-brew (i.e. filemix between floppy and CD version).

PS: if you e-mail me then pls. open a regular DOS box, then go to your STJR directory and do a "DIR /ON /S > STJR.DIR", zip STJR.DIR and attach it to the e-mail (this way I can see what files are hoplessly different... they probably all are, but anyway.)
DOSBox behaves like Sound FX 2000, bad staggered sound, also it crashes a lot.
Vladr, I emailed the main NTVDM mail address since I can't seem to access yours and don't have the energy to register on the board at the moment.
The closest thing I have to real DOS is 98SE's DOS mode... i can't seem to get the CD-ROM and mouse working in it.
At the risk of disrupting things, you might consider the possibility of emulating the Mac version. The 25th anniversary game seems fine under emulation using Basilisk II. Have yet to test "Judgement Rites" on Basilisk as I've yet to find the Mac version. That, of course, is the main "stumbling block" of this potential solution.
There's still a few sites that seem to have the Mac version for sale, but unless this is it (http://mac.the-underdogs.org/index.php?show=game&id=144) no one has it for download.
I apologize for dredging up such an old post, but I downloaded the newest version of DOSBox (.56) and the game runs without the bug, and the movies play without stuttering.
However the sound gets cut off here and there, which is bothersome. Still, this seems to show the problem is with VDMSound.

...or with Windows. 😀 Remeber, SoundFX has the same problem. 90%+ of the games that have problems under VDMSound have problems because of Windows. Trust me, if Microsoft fixed all its DOS emulation almost all games would work (except for those that run too fast, maybe). That's why DosBox is good, you don't have to depend on Bill.
