Lots of clicking done and know list is complete from Mobygames view there are missing:
- games which are not on Mobygames
- 50-100 games which have not on Mobygames Dos version screenshots

If there would be some volunteers, it would be nice to add some genre column (hint lots of Golf games..), im done with it, or year of publishing or some average review scores etc..

Update: I added more info to first post.

... Games after 1995 only

System Shock was released in 1994 and does offer a SVGA mode.

A column for the release date and the used VESA version (1.0, 1.2, 2.0 with LFB, 3.0) would be very helpful.

If you read the context of the post, it was in reference of Build's vesa capabilities, not SVGA games overall. 1995's build games all had older code predating the VESA2 implementation

Eric The Unready doesn't use 640x480 @ 256 colors. Cut-scenes are standard VGA and gameplay is 640x480 @ 16 colors (at least the disk version, I haven't played the CD version).

I will say that Links386 can play up to 1600x1200 if you have a monitor and graphic card that supports it. But it will not scale, so as you increase resolution, the window shrinks more and more. They fixed this in LinksLS. This game also plays up to 1600x1200 but in normal full screen. I actually have both of these set up on my DOS PC right now, so I can confirm this. I was also a world-ranked player of both of these games back in the day.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

If someone wants to upgrade this list just ask for write rights through Google sheets.

a related q would be asking the DOS games that scale to the highest resolution - as you say, some can do hi res but wont scale to it and of the rest most do not have more detail as such (eg textures, number of polygons and any other measure)

also, well done on being ranked so high! it was a big game, lots of players!

Hi. I just want to say that a few DOS games support 640x400x256.
This resolution is twice the resolution (2x2, 4 times the pixels) of 320x200 and works on older SVGA cards from the 1980s, which often ship with 256KB of RAM only (mainly 8-Bit ISA models).
Some cards like PVGA1A do ship with Windows 2.x and 3.x drivers that can do 640x400x256 (and 800x600x16c).
UniVBE doesn't support them, because it demands for 512KB video RAM, but the vendors' VBE TSRs may do.
640x400x256 has the lowest VBE number (100h), too and is the default resolution of PC Player Benchmark.
Here, the 640x480x256 resolution is being supported as fallback for graphics cards without 640x400x256 support (Cirrus cards?).

Syndicate and Syndicate plus are 640x480/16 colour. The dithering is so good, though, that it's easy to mistake for 256 colour.

Phantasmagoria 1 is missing. It's 640x480 256c on both DOS and Windows. Same for Gabriel Knight 2 Beast Within.
