Sorry for the necropost, but for anyone stumbling upon this topic: there is a free utility you can download called PRTADD. It can detect most PCI and PCIe parallel and/or serial port cards and register them in the BIOS Data Area (BDA). That way, well-written DOS applications and games will be able to look up the correct I/O base port corresponding to the standard device files LPT1, LPT2, COM1, etc. See this post for more info.
