In my opinion, the worst offenders regarding CPU naming is AMD in the recent years (ok, intel is not far behind). When you have to publish guides so people understand what your product names mean, you are doing something wrong.

Socket 1156 is retro? It still runs the majority of current windows software so it's not even obsolete.

The last couple of times I built systems for myself or for others, I was pretty annoyed that I had to consult very large tables to figure out if the CPU was shit or not.
There are so many variations within on generation, and it's hard to tell which features are critical for acceptable performance and which are useless or overkill.

This is what happens when salesmen instead of engineers name your products. The best customer is a confused customer. The last thing a salesman wants is a customer who knows exactly what he wants.
