I don't know if it is the most common but for me it just seemed easiest to screw 4 screws between the fins of the heatsink lik this for both of my voodoo 3 cards. The fans are still properly stuck.

Maybe just a good heatsink will be enough, problem with fans is you need headers to plug them in

You can put it in the freezer for 20-30 minutes to help make the glue brittle. You'll need to put something like a gift card down to protect the chip/pcb, and then gently pry upwards. The brittle glue should pop off with some force. The glue residue can be scrapped off with a razor blade and some IPA.
