I still wanna know what happens when those missing SMD spots are populated. There is a even earlier chip than that one you pictured that has most of the spots left unpopulated.

Unfortunately I think we could possibly learn something from a de lidded database.

No, I don't think thermal is that big of a deal for those chips. Especially in the conditions we're gonna use them. I mean they were designed to be used in laptops with potentially bad cooling, whereas now they're used on desktop motherboards with beefier coolers 😀

If I wanted to do some heavy overclocking that would probably be a bigger concern though (maybe other mods could be made for those chips for cooling ?)

I think it's a good idea to change it, to my experience the best for such things is the Artic Silver 5, it didn't dry in like 7 years on my old pc.
600 is a good overclock and ideally the limit of k6 architecture so very good work nonetheless 😀

Well I'm not sure it's actually dried thermal compound. I wonder if it's not some kind of thermal glue (Or maybe it became like glue after 22 years). Maybe I'll replace it at some point. But so far so good.

Stupid ebay seller that sold me the other epoxy didn’t send both tubes.

If anyone has the ability to look up pattents or whatever and figure out the glue used please do tell.

The Arctic Silver epoxy has not been made in ages. My guess that the hardener in any stuff that is still around has gone bad.

On top of that, thermal epoxy is not going to have anywhere near the same thermal transfer ability as good thermal paste.

AS supposedly still make the epoxy for industrial customers. IDK if eBay dudes are just breaking cases intended for that or have ancient stock.

Not urethane, but polyurethane.

You're starting to worry me if you're gonna put that on the core... at least use something vaguely appropriate for that like STAR-922 or JB Weld even (Which at least has performance in the range of low end thermal paste)

Other than making it sure that you will never be able to remove the IHS again there is no point.

in theory you wouldn't have a need to remove it again. thermal paste will age. it's either epoxy or use the same adhesive as used for the IHS it seems or pull the lid every 10 years. but in 10 years will you remember? idk. paste is non perminant and may be washed away when cleaning it just seems like the wrong approach under a IHS

I have however taken a heatsink off of a CPU 15 years after the cooler was put on and found that the AS5 is still like new and still just as much of a pain to clean as it always has been.

The higher end pastes that don't dry out are going to be fine for 15-20 years at a minimum.

AS5 is not even a high end paste anymore in regards to thermal transfer. I saw a real review of it a few years ago and it was sold as having a way higher thermal transfer rate than it actually has.

Recently upgraded my parents computer.
Prolimatech PK-1 still creamy after about 11 years.

AS5 was always overrated imo. And a pain to clean as well compared to well, virtually all other TIMs out there at the time as long as it wasn't some kind of epoxy 😜
