If anyone is having a problem with certain PPL percussion instruments looping improperly, I suggest using these replacement patches. They're the same as the original PPL 1.61 patches, but with the looping disabled.

i cant load a megaem.exe. i followed 1st post guide & tried megaem version 3.04, 3.10, 3.11 but i still have same error: no VCPI interface found. i think it's a problem with EMM386 but i dont know how to set up a DOS config.sys in DOSBox... there are only options to enable or disable XMS and EMS in dosbox.conf but this cannot help. is there any chance to run megaem? soundblaster midi in Legend Of Kyrandia sounds awful 😉

(sorry 4 my english...)

If you're running DOSBOX is MEGAEM even necessary? I have a Gravis Ultrasound Max and according to the manual MEGAEM is a utility for emulating Roland Sound Canvas, MT-32 and Sound Blaster which DOSBOX already emulates. In fact, when I had the card installed in my machine I had compatibility issues with several games. For the games/demos that had native GUS support the sound quality was outstanding! The majority of DOS games, however, only worked with adlib/soundblaster and I recall some games having no sound even with MEGAEM and the correct configs.

Edit: Oh, and Huggybaby, excellent tutorial BTW 😀

The emulated GUS is not complete and thus MEGAEM won't work even with VCPI. But DOSBox does not emulate Roland Sound Canvas or MT-32.

Thanks for the comments (and the compliment Norton Commander 😀). I certainly know more about megaem now than I did before! I never got it to work either and now I know why.

So megaem not working holds true for .73 correct? Or did someone magically get it working? Real shame too as I would love for these wonderful instruments to take over for General midi or at least any game that supports Roland which many of them appear to.

Another thing, I can't seem to get this to work with Wing Commander 3 as a music card, any idea why? Simply says "Cannot start up your music card" All other GUS supported games that I have, work fine. 🙁

You're right, I mis-read the DOSBOX wiki section regarding soundcard emulation. My apologies.

This is why my GUS MAX had a brief existence in my PC. I had lots of issues getting this card to work with most games via the MEGAEM soundblaster emulation and the few that had built-in support for it. Apparently only hackers new the ins and outs of the GUS because only demos that were written with GUS support worked without issues.

I am having some issues with an instrument from Pro Patches Light 1.61, in some songs where I have the snare drums and other various instruments, at times that snare drum keeps on repeating itself for the next seconds where it should have been muted or played at a different rythm. Is this a known issue? I have tried running that game without anything in the background (closed all the aplications besides DosBox). I had this issue more pronounced in 0.72, and I still have it in 1.73, only that it doesn't occur that often (still too often for me). I've attached 3 examples to explain exactly what happens

Does anybody know what I can do to fix this problem?

Well, you have to specify that environment variable. But, the easiest thing to do is download the files already made from http://www.mediafire.com/?9gz1tm02zob

please note that gus emulation works without these patches as well.
These just add extra stuff to games that support it. It's not required

I know this is quite a bump but do you mean I don't need any extra files for GUS emulation?

Depends on the game.

What does that mean in reality? I tested it with Dark Forces, Duken Nukem 3D, Rise of the Triad, Asterix & Obelix and a few others. They ALL need real patches like provided in the "ready-to-go" archive from Huggybaby. So Qbix's statement doesn't seem to be valid since it is not optional but required.
