What drives do you normally use? Floppy drive outliers like your Samsung often interest me, curious as to "why" it's a miracle drive. 😀

I have one of the same samsung drives. I never noticed it being special. That said, I have an LS-120 and it is AMAZING for recovering bad floppy disks.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Im watching retro related videos on Youtube as my nose has been running constantly for 36+ hours. I do not get sick often, only once every other year or so but when I get a cold it always seems to be the worst kind which dosnt even allow me to sleep.

Hope you get well soon!

Coughing, with a burning sensation too? If so, I know it. I have had that for a number of years in the past.
Everytime the weather changes from winther to spring and from fall to winther.
Wish you the best recovery. Have you tried those vitamin-c pill's? And warm milk with honney.
Then a lot of fruit and so on...

EDIT:
As you are from Sweden, you might know these.... They work wonders, and got them adviced from a couple from norway.
They used them everytime they went "längdåkning" in the "fjäll", and yes. They work wonders. 😜
I have used them once, as a prevention tool, when I sat at a shelter on hides. Making coffee from snow, on fire in the open.

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.
Those cakes make you sick....

No cough, only high fever, a constantly running nose and a little bit of a sore throat, its typical for the kind of cold I usually get. I probably got the cold from my parents as they have been sick and I celebrated easter there. The funny thing is that my father has been coughing but not my mother, she had the same symptoms as I have now.

My cure is pizza delivered to the door.

How odd, my web server simply refuses to work despite me having changed nothing.

No problem, I guess, because I have regular backups. The worry is that whatever is wrong must have been there already and will therefore happen again. I have no idea what's wrong with it, it just fell off the face of the earth last night and has refused to work since. If it takes too much more time I'll probably have to start up my fail-over machine. I suppose it might give me a chance to put in place some upgrades I had planned to the webs.

Sucks if I have to use the fail-over box though, because that's Hooker and I'd rather be using the machine myself. I'm sure it's a small problem somewhere though, I'll probably just suddenly figure it out when I'm not thinking about it... Probably left some box checked or unchecked somewhere and it does seem to be from some extension or other.

Edit: OK, yeah, it's ignoring any configuration changes I make and resetting them as soon as I reboot the system. So I can't disable or enable services permanently. I don't have time to restore the image right now, so I guess I'll have to update the fail-over box with the newer files and run that for now. Expect things to be a bit shaky for a while until I can get it going again. Might use this opportunity to go over to complete reliance on VMs for it, it has the power and running the bare hardware is restrictive, it would be easier to manage too.

Edit 2: It's up, but I've lost SQL and a few accounts and such for a hidden site (nothing too interesting, it just wasn't finished so never went online) and whilst that's not an immediate problem I would like to know what caused it. Still slower than hell so I'm thinking that Dave, at least in this incarnation, may be better just retiring or, at the very least, getting a tedious re-install of Windows and the server software. It has had far too many configuration changes over the years for me to really be able to figure out when and where things started breaking but it has been seeing some performance black holes for a while. Time for a nice refresh I think.

Fired up the ACER Across 486 which hadn't been fired up for a few years. Half pie expected cmos battery failure but it booted straight up so played a bit of solitaire:

There's a glitch in the matrix.

Apparently 32-bit is dead and nobody likes P4s.
Of course, as always, I'm open to correction...😉

I won a few back when Windows 3.1 was the new kid on the block. Guess the GUI I'm using. Clue-it wasn't made by MS. There's no version of MS Windows on the machine at all.

The Phillips LCD monitor matches the Acer quite nicely.

I have never once won a game of Solitaire and am honestly convinced the computer cheats. Perhaps I should give it another go tomorrow.

I've never won a game of 3-draw. Like anyone plays that version in real life anyway!

It can be won, but playing either 3-draw or 1-draw Vegas solitaire is a sucker bet. The percentages are just too low.

Having played a few hundred hours of it on both old and newer OS's, I can attest that the win ratio is -A LOT- higher in the version included with windows 7 than any of the older versions. I win about 1 out of every 10 games in win7 solitaire. But the old OS's like Win 3.1, 98, XP, I'd do good to win 1 in 50 or even 1 in 100 games.

Not strictly retro in itself but I happened to notice, and capture, my car reaching this mileage today:

I like this Compaq 118053-001 i440BX motherboard.

With a Coppermine Celeron CPU it reports that the CPU isnt supported but everything including L2 cache works anyhow. I hate it when motherboards post just to tell you no no no and refuses to boot.

Awesome, Indrid Cold! Love your BBS 😀

Thank you! I've always been really fascinated by this world, because when I was child I've never been able to afford to fully live it: I didn't have the right equipment, or simply because at some point (at least in Italy) BBS suddenly disappeared (law problems for rights-protected content, etc.) - for my BBS I'm using and customizing Mystic BBS software, on Raspberry Pi with Raspbian Linux distro.

Here, photos of one of my 486 connected to the Internet, browsing through Arachne web browser in full MS-DOS 6.22:

A week ago, my friend challenged me to watch porn in Arachne with my 486SX... It didn't work very well, but it seems images could be loaded at least, it just took a long time. I would have posted photos of this in action, but I think it would be against the forum rules.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thus far today I have done nothing retro as I'm still glued to fixing the server. Currently setting up a Windows 2008 VM but using my laptop to do it so I can test things out, if it works I should be able to just copy the VM over to the server without much of any fuss.

I have a worry that troubles me a long time now... I have to rearrange all the small space of my garage/lab, I really have so much stuff to fix at best and work waiting for me. Upto now I used the 'main' PC (architecture based on AMD Phenom II X4 processor, 4GB DDR2, nVidia GTX 480, 250gb SSD, etc.) at home, in my apartment... but I'm strongly considering whether this is the right choice. My world is the nostalgic one of the command line in MS-DOS, beautiful 2D games and great sound tracks... floppy noise while being used and wonderful VGA graphics. Perhaps, the time has come to make a choice: to bring at home one of my 486 in fixed station, which until then I used in the laboratory as possible, and bring the main PC in the same garage, to be used only for heavy duties, like development of RAW with Lightroom, software study in Debian, occasional modern video games (especially Indies) and SDR radio related... the problem is that I have to rearrange my entire home network! Second problem: whether to take, with the help of a KVM, at home even the PC with Windows '98, and the choice of monitors: CRT 22" flat glass ViewSonic, CRT 15" classic Compaq, 15" 4:3 Acer LCD? Obviously I'm incline to 22" CRT, but I have to optimize well the spaces.
