One of my Kayak XU computers has a Dead CMOS battery. I don’t know if these are rechargeable or if you need to replace them but the battery is soldered onto the motherboard.

Any know anything about how to replace these batteries ?

They are recharcheable and reload when you have the machine plugged in and / or powered on

Very nice lineup, I'm also a fan of the "boring big corporate OEM" design over generic builds.
and always good to see a few dual socket machines

Got also a XU800 with Dual P3 800.
I'm struggling to get a proper GPU running in this machine, i'm so far to conclude it has some sort of damage and wanted to hear your opinions and experiences.
The single working GPU in my possession is a Voodoo 3 2000 which works with the machine in 3d-accelerated full screen settings.
I tried some but they won't work properly:
- Hd3450 (Has a bridge chip i guess and i've read they won't work in older P3 systems)
- FX5900XT
- Radeon 9200SE
- Geforce 2/4 MX
Whenever i try 3d/d3d games with these cards the machine crashes instantly to black screen and i have to power cycle it.
I wonder if it's incompatibility or if it has some sort of damage.
Because i have another Kayak XM600 which runs great with a Radeon 9250SE.

Note that all cards on your list except Geforce are AGP 3.0 8x cards but XU800 has AGP 2.0 PRO 4x slot.
I'd think they should still work though.

No experience since I only have Voodoo3 3000 and not any of the more recent cards. I also didn't run any 3d stuff yet, was more tinkering with the hardware.

What OS are you running?
Did you reinstall OS to clean slate for each different driver?

PC: HP Kayak XU800 [2x PIII 1Ghz, 512 Mb RAM, Voodoo3 3000, SB Audigy Platinum EX]
Sparc: Blade 1000 [2x UltraSparc III, 3Gb RAM, 2x 73Gb FC-AL 10k, XVR-1000], Blade 100
PA-RISC: HP C3750 [FX10Pro]
Sony F1XDJ, A1200

You did replace exhaust fan with Noctua like I did. Did you replace intake fan also?

P.S. My Ultraflow is not see-through like yours is! not that I run the machine with open side.

It's XP32SP3
No i just changed the cards in the old install and installed the driver over another. At some point that seems to have broken something.

No i didn't touch the intake yet, it's quiet enough i'd say.
After looking at your pics again i wonder why you have "only" SD-RAM and no RAMBUS like i have and which is usual in a XU800?
Where there different memory boards for them?

Yes! SDRAM was cheaper and could have larger capacity initially at least. My machine was a cheaper variant with SDRAM and IDE disk.
Of course I do now have lots of SCSI disks that I can use in there.

Actually I have already upgraded, I have RDRAM now just didn't post yet.

Here are the photos of both riser boards:

The attachment xu800_daughterboards.JPEG is no longer available

SDRAM:

The attachment xu800_daughterboard_sdram.JPEG is no longer available

RDRAM:

The attachment xu800_daughterboard_rdram.JPEG is no longer available

There were actually two revisions of RDRAM board and this is the last one. Dunno the differences between them.
As you can see, SDRAM one is even bigger than RDRAM.

Also the CPUs, so now dual 1Ghz.

Alas I could not find heatsinks of proper size fins. Got couple of after-market ones with fans.

As P3 doesn't have thermal sensor on die decided to still put fans in. Used distancers to try direct the airflow up in hopes of it interfering less with Ultraflow guide.

Want to replace fans with better ones - these are noisy with pitch I don't like.

I never knew about them being rechargeable, but on my XW 6/450 there are pins for plugging in a replacement battery. The pins are in what I'd call the "northeast" corner - up near the SCSI connectors etc. I've never laid eyes on whatever is installed in the mobo from factory.
I don't remember the circumstances when mine turned up dead - so maybe it would have recharged and I just didn't know it.

I got the external battery like 15-20 years ago at a local parts shop, back when those places still existed. It's a 4 pin connector if I remember right, it was a commodity part for any generic PC. I leave it unplugged from the mobo whenever I'm not going to be using it.

Also I would need to find the HP Keyboards too.
I have a few I just don’t know where they are.

I do want to upgrade it with 512mb of ECC RAM and Dual SCSI hard drives.

Ahh thanks for the info, i wasn't aware about that.

For those coolers i always take a noctua 40mm fan and rewire it to 5V. Check if that works out.

That would be the Tezro.

Well at least the battery is recharging in the XAs, it has not the CR2320 type but a fixed strangely looking one, don't have pics right now.
But do you have pics of your XW 6/450? I don't find any on the net

I didn't exactly had a problem here, just detailing future plans. The fans size is 50mm though
so I am thinking to go Fractal Silent Series.

Why do you do 5V?

That's right, the holy grail of retro workstations. I am jealous.

You owe us this, you know. I feel bad for your Kayak that is still in Garage.
It cannot be there for much longer.

Also, SparcStations I remember in your photos. Did you install NextStep
already?
