gave this a quick try on a pentium 90, haven't noticed too many issues other than it locking up on the intro without a CD driver. but this is one of those games where if you had a high-end machine at the time it's ridiculously fast with even L2 cache disabled and way too slow with L1+L2 disabled. i'm guessing a 200 or 233 with both caches disabled is the only chance for a pentium to play this.

as for the patch, from what i could tell, it actually makes the game run even faster. and it contains a new (bigger) dos4gw which is dated 4 months older than the one on the CD, but i suspect it's actually a newer version and the other one probably got the newer date from being copied during development.

I've got a throttle blaster installed on my mmx retro rig , and I can clock the game down to 33mhz just using a potentiometer.

The attachment 20241026_115328.jpg is no longer available

So I'm not sure thats the issue , weirdly the sequel works fine , and I'm guessing its using the same game engine but updated.

yeah, didn't mean to say the speed was your issue, just some general observations. it could be you are just using a bad copy of the game. one other thing i did notice is it claims to need 530 or 550k conventional and 4 MB XMS despite it apparently being an extender game.

No worries , its a fair observation.

But yeah i have had the exact same issues with both the floppy version of the game and the CD version.

Also I've used boot disks , to run the game without himem and stuff , but no dice.

Generally with himem I've got about 600kb free memory.

It seems that s3 trios run the game properly but with the virge its either conflicting with other hardware or has compatibility issues.

I just can't pinpoint exactly what's going on.

I remember Quarantine having issues running on a P100 w/ S3 Trio64V+ too, and the V+ is more similar to the ViRGE with regards to 2D. Just remember the instant segfaults at the road
