Quake2. The game was primarily developed on Permedia hardware

According to Carmack's plan they were using Intergraph workstations with RealiZm boards. They used Permedia boards for the Alpha port (scroll down, news from Brian Hook: http://www.quake2.com/oldnews/10-18-97_10-22-97.html) - and it was rather slow - I get a bit more than 10 FPS on my Alpha 21164 533 MHz with a Permedia 2 card (it's even worse on a GLoria XL with the Glint chipset). I still hope I will upgrade it to a Powerstorm (rebadged Intergraph RealiZm).

And here's a picture for proof.

And here's the full system he used

I'd seriously love to have one of those widescreen CRT's to go with my Intergraph system but the cost of freight shipping makes anything but local pickup a losing proposition.

On the benchmark scores posted above, I am curious as to what cpu the card is being paired with. I have only ever used the card with cpus above 400mhz, and I always find it to be a reliable card for games from like early 1998 and prior. A lot of games that would run with issues on other cards like Wipeout XL, Twisted Metal 2, Bio Freaks, Resident Evil, etc would just run perfect on the Permedia 2. Due to that I have a couple of them that I'm keeping stowed away.

I have bought a Permedia 2 based Creative Exxtreme Value AGP with 4MB SGRAM.
Thx a lot for mentioning the games, that run fluently, I will try them out asap.

Highlghter for me:

Resident Evil 1,2
Wipeout XL
Twistet Metal 2,
Bio Freaks

Further goals:

Quake 1 with OpenGL patch
Quake 2 with higher resolutions than 512*384 (yesterday this was the only 3D OpenGL resolution, all other switched to software)
Quake 3 OpenGL
Unreal 1 OpenGL
Deus Ex 1 OpenGL
WoT OpenGL

Nice to have:

Tomb Raider 1,2,3
Midtown Madness
Drakan
Half Life 1
Max Payne 1
G-Police
Giants Citizen Kabuto
Black & White
Incoming and Incoming Forces
Descent 1,2,3
Forsaken
Doom 95
Hexen 2 OpenGL
Heretic 2 OpenGL
Need for Speed 5 Porsche

Guess 4mb is too low for 3d games, my 8mb card worked with 800*600*16 in quake3.

Yesterday and the day before I bechmarked Quake 2 on P3-450, 64MB RAM, Permedia 2 AGP 4MB with 640x480x16 and latest Permedia 2 driver from 1999.
Results from timedemo 1 map demo1.dm2 => 7 fps (woow, what a 3D "decelerator")
I thought, that maybe I did sth wrong but today I m lucky, discovering this article from a german guy, who benchmarked his Permedia 2 with 8MB on an Athlon XP 2400 with only 11.5 fps:

Athlon XP 2400+ FSB133 2GHz
Epox 8KA3+ [KT333]
512MB PC400 Corsair CMX512-3200C2PRO v4.1 @ 266MHZ CL2 2-2-5
Windows 98SE, DX8.1

This means, that this card is really almost like the S3 Virge DX "decelerator" as you can run only a few games smoothly from the early to mid 90s.
The only "advantage" I see is, that it runs GL-Quake 1 and Quake 2 with a very bright OpenGL image and you don't need idgamma tools.

edit: I reduced the size of the window and the resolution to 512x384. Now I get some 15.6 fps with timedemo1. This is playable as long as you don't have too much enemies ahead of you

That is an awful framerate; perhaps the "last" driver is not good for Quake 2.
I measured 16.8 at 640x480 and 10.6 at 800x600 with a similar card.

Maybe its simply not good at quake2. i remember testing some other benchmarks including quake3, counterstrike and 3dmark2000, and while its not a fast card, it can reach about half the speed of riva128.
