Battle For Westnoth 😀 I believe that game was heavily inspired by Warlords 2 and Warlords 2 Deluxe, if I am not mistaken 😀

The recently remastered Warcraft II sacrifices the old game's fluid animation for fancier graphics assets

Gah, the updated graphics don't look as good at all -- at least, in WC2 there's hardly any meaningful difference between the original sprites and tilesets and the "remastered" versions. Also, what's the deal with those black outlines on everything, did they try to emphasize the "2D animation" look? Looks bad IMO, and the WC2 remaster was not needed in the first place. They also pulled the DRM-free originals of both games from GOG to coincide with the release of the remasters. Not cool.

Actually, no, not at all. Battle for Wesnoth is mostly based on a console/non-PC game Master of Monsters, I think the developers acknowledged that fact in some interview or other. On the other hand, there are very little similarities to Warlords games in terms of gameplay mechanics (e.g., no castles with troop building options, no unit stacks and so on).

If you want a libre Warlords II Deluxe clone, LordsAWar! is your choice.

Anyway, this does not have a lot to do with the Warcraft series, now does it?

Thank you for the correction 😀 It has been a long time, since I played LordsAWar! Sorry for the confusion. But still great games 😀
