I purchased a Geforce 6800 Ultra AGP, for a descent price ( Read not cheap, but definitely discounted), from a seller with bad pictures....

This silly thing is basically brand new, it doesn't even have AGP Slot indentations on it (Never used) and it came in the Original BOX!! There was no pictures of the box at all 🤣??

So happily confused.

Read that, thanks! I like the idea of a robust solution that isn't permanent, like the nvme heatsink (with no thermal tape, just regular thermal paste) but I am worried that such solution might be too much pressure for the bridge chip to handle. Maybe with some nuts.

It's so overkill though.

If it's spring loaded like in your pic it might work but still i'd be worried about putting any pressure on it since it's so tiny (compared to the die on let's say a southbridge on a mainboard.)

Main issue with that idea is: how the heck am I even going to tighten the tiny nuts, under the nvme heatsink? 😜

I tend to take a lot of risks on bad product listings, but I still try to be smart about it. For instance I purchased a Geforce TI 4600 Gainward Golden Sample, for like 25$, the pictures looked like a haunted Halloween motel, filled with roaches, but the product was fine 🤣!

You still have to be careful though, I have gotten a lot bad items as well.

Reminds me that I almost bought a 9700 pro with mouse poop and urine on it. I contacted the seller about it because he didn't even realize. Said he would be willing to sell it for 30$, I nearly accepted but ended up refusing that offer. I replied "sorry no, graphics card with mouse droppings is past what I find acceptable, even for 30$". Then he roughly cleaned the card and sold it for 90$. The fun part is that I eventually regretted my decision. I will never own a 9700 pro 😁

Also folks, this is a reminder that you should clean second hand stuff thoroughly....... really thoroughly.

I got a box...

It is unfortunately not quite complete as it does not have the CD or manual. It does have the complete complement of hardware, which includes the interface, serial cable and one lamp and one appliance module. I might finally have enough appliance modules to do some cool shit, the lamp ones are 5x more common and kinda meh.

Edit: all the nothing I've done so far... X10, '80s smart home tech, Radio Shack Plug'n'power etceteraaaa....

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Picked up a sweet X800 Pro AGP for 20$ that was supposedly dead. Plugged it in.. fired right up! Even has 1.6ns Ram which is the same RAM they put on the X850XT PE cards.

that seller had two on sale... did you get the other one too? 😜 i tried to get it, but seller wasnt shipping to europeland

unrelated: i just tested the 8500LE number two (yes, I got another! and number 3 is on the way.... but it's a 9100 actually).

this one has some issues. vga port is completely dead even after cleaning, dvi works and it can do the first 3dmark 2001 benchmark, but crashes during the second
should i try recapping it? aesthetically in perfect conditions except the noisy fan

Both Asus P7P55D-e deluxe & premium passed memtest. However Maximus III formula does not start even with a new CPU and RAM and furthermore I7 875K is not booting up when put in one of the 2 good boards!

Possibly an old bios in both cases.

Good news is they all appear to have removable bioses, so it is possible to boot one, swap the chip and force flash update.

I'd suggest forcibly flashing the maximus chip.
It sounds like the other 2 can be updated the normal way.
Just don't mix up the chips!

Lol!! I remember seeing this card. Yea mouse poop was a step to far for me...

I went back looking for that second card, but it was already sold. (X800) 🙁

Speaking of these X8xx cards, I have several I got for few € each from Estonian ebay equivalent, but they all have bad fans that make huge noise and oiling etc. will not fix that. It seems the fans are some sort of size that nobody else uses so I wonder if anyone knows any new replacements that would fit without having to modify stuff ?

Are you speaking of the Blower Fan on the X850 type or the 9800XT/X800 Style.

I bought this for my 9800XT (same fan as a lot of those x8xx) and it works perfectly:

Just one warning, it has a blue LED on it, so it's not for the purists 😀

x850 x18xx, x19xx were just loud even when they were new
The fan is part of the shroud unfortunately. You cant easily replace the fan while keeping the acrylic transparent conveyor thingy
It might be possible to pull the fan off the shaft that is located on the acrylic shroud but I've never tried that. The acrylic is very prone to cracking
There are similar newer Millennium Ati fans that might fit on that shaft and be quieter... I probably will try eventually since I have a bunch of x1800s
There are replacement fans on the bay but chances are they are just as loud

I've had one apart just last week. The acrylic was very stout ... went to town polishing it (was really tarnished from presumably nicotine) came out great. No signs of weakness in the acrylic. I tried lubing the shaft (pun intented) but made things worse ... the fan had a rough life though (will post pics). Another member also said when the C-clip is removed the fan just drops out. However i need to remove the entire HS for that so i need to take it apart again and not really in the mood for it. It may be that the outer part of the electric motor is somehow glued to the casing ... if that's the case there is no replacing the fan unless you can swap the entire top acrylic part including the fan. I have aquired an X1950XT aswell... just as loud as both my X850's. I don't know how i used to put up with that noise back in the day (mid 2000's)

There's a fan in there somewhere...

You'd think the acrylic would clear up after getting the dust off but that wasn't the case ( was not yet cleaned in this pic though)

All polished up

Spent the better part of 2 hours on it ... what a pita the polishing was. In hindsight i should have removed the fan from the housing but was not sure how.

@AGP4Life, can you check if you can overclock the x800 pro memories at all? I think they are undervolted on both the pro and the xt, so while being 1.6ns, they cant reach the PE frequencies

I bumped it up from [450 MHz] to [540Mhz] on the first test, which was X800XT PE memory Speeds, and it was fine. I'll try 600/620MhZ when I get a chance and see how it does.
