Actually if you look there is quite a bit of spam in the members list dating all the way back to 2002.
A lot of it is obvious.

Yet their spam persists in the list.

Examples of what exactly?
My point is the spam links in the members list are still fully functional even when the member's account isn't.

I think it's incredibly funny that if I post the same links in this thread as examples the spam police come along and delete it while the same links in the members list are left alone.

visibility.
the memberlist can't be viewed without being logged in, while your post can.
Spammers post in order to get visibility for their links. So the removal effort is concentrated on where they would get the most exposure.

Then the question is why are spammers left in the members list at all.

as it takes a lot work to delete them.
You don't want to know how many pages I have been through already.

Why do they even target here, of all places?

I don't think it's usually a matter of targeting, they just throw it out randomly at any place they trip over.
If it was targeting it would at least be somewhat related to the site topic and it usually isn't.

I saw that too. Why on earth would a spammer post something about the latest Batman movie, in the VOGONS forum, in Russian? What gain does he expect to have from it? And what kind of blockhead does he think would click on that, anyway? A bit hard to understand... 😖

What makes you think the spammer was a human? 😉

Well, even if it was a robot or something, somebody had to program it. I guess enough people click on those things and see ads (maybe) that someone out there makes money on it. Good thing we have an automatic army of anti-spam people! 😉
