I made a couple of edits to some of my older (retired) PC build threads today to delete some old images and then got this message:

You can only edit a limited number of posts at a time. Try again in 1 day, 22 hours, and 15 minutes.

Why am I not allowed to edit my own posts?

The limit is there to stop people for going haywire on their own posts. We have had multiple occasions where whole threads loose context due to this. Unfortunately it may also trigger on legitimate cases like this.

Ha yeah, I'm reminded of several times I've seen someone ragequit a forum and use a script or something to nuke all their posts. Down the track you find one, probably containing some information you're after, but instead it says "post edited because I'm a big baby."

Some time ago i also proposed a feature of "Kudos" or "Appreciation". A positive-only rating system for posts.
For example, i would thank every post in List of Currently Free Games when a game is posted there.

+1 on this, just came to report it myself

Giving people likes on posts has been asked for many, many times and always got shot down. IIRC, the resistance is that many people here actually want to be in a more classic forum environment, and adding likes to posts has the effect of pushing it towards social media and away from being a forum. It also creates a kind of popularity contest atmosphere, regardless of whether or not it's just likes. In that case, you have the inevitable karma farming people and whathaveyou.

I personally don't care all that much, but it would definitely have that effect. Anytime you make a huge change like that in an online community, it's a double-edged sword.

I often get replies or messages on a thread but I have nothing to respond, so to not appear as ignorant it could be wise to send a reactionary reply. Maybe a thumbs up would be good, it could also stay visible just for the user receiving it and the person sending the reaction

I'm not a mod, so there's no reason to sell it to me, and as I said I don't really care one way or the other.

I'm just telling you why this has been rejected over and over in the past, and why it's not likely to happen now or in the future. Yes, there are benefits, but those benefits have been determined to be outweighed by the negative effects of adding a like button.

Furthermore, if you want to send a reaction, there's nothing stopping you from posting the reaction. That's your choice, no a limitation.

EDIT: Just to be clear, the tone of this post is lighthearted not angry\argumentative. It is hard to convey that with text. 😅

Your opinion of what is content may be different than mine. Perhaps a one or two others got a chuckle out of my awful attempt at humor. Since there is no kudos\voting system, I will never know if more people liked my post than disliked it. Thankfully, that makes no difference to me. I for one am glad that this particular slice of the internet hasn't yet devolved into a thumb up\down karma farming game driven by mob-mentality like most other sites.

I sometimes visit reddit and a few other forums, and the ones that have "reactions" and "karma" inevitably have this issue of having these totally unnecessary sides\controversies in most discussions as well as incorrect information and misconceptions being "upvoted" to the moon, while at the same time they tend to actually hide posts that get downvoted by the same people that upvoted the others. In an attempt to "sanitize" discussion to maximize the constant dopamine hits of the site's addicts users, they end up with an automated process that massively exaggerates bias and destroys any sense of normal human communication that is left. Five or ten people who feel strongly about something can make it seem like 500 feel the same way, even though no one else even cared enough to type a single word.

This is what the internet is in 2025, and what it was not 20+ years ago.

People 20 years ago thought that the "You'd say that while hiding behind the keyboard, but wouldn't say it to someones face." aspect of the internet was bad enough. They had no idea that some day there would be websites where someone's genuine, honest thoughts or insights could be put out there for the world to see while a thousand people spent 1-2 seconds each determining that said post was worthless\wrong because of the ever growing number of downvotes next to it. It's the equivalent of a mob of hundreds\thousands of completely clueless people screaming obscenities at you\me as they run by your home even though they have no idea who we are and haven't even read what we have to say.

Whew... haven't had a good "I'm old and the world is getting worse." rant in at least a couple days. Thanks for reading. Please don't downvote me to oblivion... oh wait. 😋

Yeah, all is cool. I just wanted to continue the same idea you started - because of no "kudos-system" one must make a post. And that because of no "kudos-system", all other people get notified in a way when someone just shows appreciation. (I expect clicking "thumbs up" on a post using kudos-system not making the thread unread in "your posts" or "new posts" lists)

(Reddit and other such places have up and down votes. It's completely different system compared to what i originally suggested. While at the surface they look similar, a positive-only system behaves completely differently)

I see, that's fair enough.

Personally, I am okay with them being this way because I don't find it a bother and I only check some threads from time to time. If there isn't much to read, it only takes a few seconds of my time. I feel like if someone is watching and waiting for new posts to pop up in absolutely any thread on the forums, they probably aren't doing anything super important (that is the case for me when I am doing that... 🤣). If there are so many content-less "I agree" posts that it is taking up a significant amount of your time or cell-data or something, then it may not be a bad idea to take a break from forums.

Having gone through chronic forum-addiction many years ago (35k+ posts on one board) when I had some health problems, I can say that it is almost always a good idea to just step away and check the forums later if you aren't researching or discussing something specific and the time could be spent elsewhere. That's the beautiful thing about them. The information and the thoughts are here to stay and they will always be chronological and will be waiting for you whenever you want to read about that topic. Forums are great and VOGONS is by far the best one I've ever been on. 🙂

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

FYI, I tend to close ancient threads with bumps caused by "like" posts when I see them. Its offtopic and irrevelant. If you do this you better put more content in the post that continues the discussion assuming the thread isn't one from 1-2+yrs ago where the issue was resolved or op isnt still around etc etc

If you go around only "liking" posts I suggest you do the exact same thing in RL and see where that gets you.

If such a "feature" aka trash was added I recommend having the ability to turn it off or on in the forum itself per user so the user doesn't have to jump through hoops with browser addons to remove the idiocy.

That makes a good scenario to have a "like" feature because most of the time there is nothing to say extra. Posts should be meaningful and Vogons maintains that, a barrage of "Thanks" in comments makes no sense; additionally most wouldn't want or find a reason to continue explaining something on a thankful post (to classify as more content)

Yeah, I was using a browser plugin to change certain UI things for quite a while as we were told, tough luck, we know it is crappy but it is staying that way.

Check these issues with the font:
Il
(Which is upper case i and which is Lower case L ?)
0oO
(Which is is the zero and which are O's?)

Sans serif should never be an option on a forum, especially one that has part numbers posted regularly.

It is even worse when writing programs and I see code posted regularly. The only way to make sure it is correct is to copy/paste to a program where the font is set to a serif type font.

You know, I was just thinking yesterday about how the font was weird, particularly with numbers... 1234567890... why are some of them dangling down below the others?
