Think I have had it with my KT7A RAID mobo.

Lately it has gived me so many BSOD's in both Windows 2000 and Win98SE...and every know and then it seem to "loose track" of my SB Live and can't install it's drivers again with BSOD's... 😵

After some ##XX!!!|§$££@!! words flying out of my mouth I replaced the SB Live with a Terratec 512i soundcard instead which has the same cabalities as an SB Live....seem to work so far 😀 (fingers crossed)
Only drawback is that it doesn't like to live with my AWE32 (non pnp) drivers being loaded in Win98SE but the Terratec 512i has nice legacy support in Win98 so it's no loss 😁

Amigaz, is your Abit Raid board OK now? I've had my non-Raid board running for a couple of days, and I've noticed a couple of strange "lock ups" in Win98SE. Probably nothing to worry about. My video card is a voodoo 3 3000. I noticed, when playing VGA DOS games, that the screen displayed a bit of "interference", as if there was some kind of minor graphical compatibility problem. Also, the heatsink got very hot. I propped up a fan next to the V3's heatsink, and that seemed to stop the lock ups, but this may have been a coincidence, who knows.

It's working quite flawlessly now....but some games like Call Of Duty for example crashes sometimes..

Many DOS games refuse to run also...I guess 1995-96 and later DOS games will work

You guys should try to prove/disprove the 'ol talk about how that 686A/B can corrupt HDDs.

JUst tried jemmex as a replacement for HIMEM.SYS and EMM386...now I can get some games working I couldn't get running befiore with a major crash 😀

A minor problem I seem to have in DOS is frequent minor crackling sounds from my AWE32 when using it in games 😜

Wish I could use UMBPCI but it doesn't support the VIA KT133A 🙁

I don't think that was any particular fault with the chipset... I never had a problem with it anyway. I suspect that infamy stemmed from a combination of a few dodgy driver revisions and overclocking, and it just snowballed into a "zOMG Via is teh suxx0rz" thanks to internet forums.

The problem does exist, but it can easily be avoided. And it's not caused by the VIA 686 southbridge alone, certain PCI cards and drivers also play a part in this.

I've run a massively overclocked gaming rig and a few servers based on KT133A for several years and never encountered that kind of trouble. The data corruption issue was blown way out of proportion.

Reason enough to use a BX chipset. 😁

Yeah..but no way I'm going back to 100mhz FSB 😜 😉

Why not? What are you losing? (Not an attack, I really want to know. What's a few percentage points for stability?)

The PC needs to be fast enough for retro games, not blazing like a modern quad core.

No offense taken 😀

I can be a speed freak sometimes...the reason I want a 133mhz fsb system is that I plan to use this machine for some day to day tasks too 😉

I havent really experienced any crackling sounds in DOS on my rig. Which games are you referring to? I've been playing settlers 2 and duke mostly, but I can try other ones as well. Maybe its some BIOS settings?

Got a pleasant suprise today when testing out a Radeon 9800X in my Abit KT7A Raid...it was defect and fried something on the mobo.....so bye-bye my plans to build a fast system with an ISA slot (again) 😵

I'm both sorry to hear that..... *and* I told you so. 😢 😀

Time for that BX chipset now?

Did you tell me not to find a defect gfx card and try it in this motherboard? 😉

I'm going to stick with my Abit ST6 Raid Tualatin 1.4 for older windows games...I'm tired of failing hardware right now

I bought this one:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem& … em=280341679332
(BCM MC845DL Mainboard)

Ok, so it's not Athlon nor BX, but does have 2 ISA... 😁

But it doesn't do 533mhz bus, only 400mhz... 😢
And the bios have no relevant settings for the CPU, which means no overclocking.

So I had to acquire one of those 'rare' P4 2,8Ghz...
Havent tested it any further yet, too many projects, but at least it works fine.
(brand new even, in box with all trappings!)

Not sure how it holds up against those Athlons, but from tests/reviews I've seen it looks like anything(P4) over 2.2Ghz is faster than the XP2000 (?).

Oh well, at least it was cheap...

I had a 2.6ghz/400fsb P4 on a sis based motherboard. It was almost identical in performance with my 2200+ rated Athlon. Maybe your will do better with the intel chipset.

"Retro Rocket"
Athlon XP-M 2200+ // Epox 8KTA3
Radeon 9800xt // Voodoo2 SLI
Diamond MX300 // SB AWE64 Gold

I have a 3.2 GHz 1MB Prescott in the drawer. Got it for free with a dead mobo. 😜 I just can't justify buying hardware to run that furnace, knowing that it's slower and shockingly hotter than a modern budget CPU.
