Please do, mate. It's be great (all the more so since the XBox 1 homebrew scene is so uneventful nowadays).

Hey Perth2008,
I can't see where the key config menus aren't aligned? Can you double check this or provide me with a screenshot?
the cracking audio seems to be related to the reverb. No idea so far why but i'll get it sorted.
Hi sirlemonhead
Misalignment shown in images below (if this works) for Predator configuration (same for Alien and Marine) WHEN accessed via ESC menu. More to do with "misalignment" of "Use These Settings" and "Reset to Defaults" relative to the empty rectangle at top and text beneath, especially as you scroll down. Obviously minor and indeed more or less the same "misalignment" (lack of centering) as for audio settings (also shown) but as no scrolling is involved it is less of a cosmetic issue.
When you access configuartion keys from the main menu for any character the key assignments appear inside the rectangle. This (text outside/beneath rectangle) is/has been the situation with the ESC accessed menus since even the myAVP.exe days, if I recall correctly.
Also shown is Marine HUD with white lines around ammo and health text mentioned before ... which you see as an NVIDIA issue.
Hope this clarifies. All thius is more a cosmetic thing than critical.

Hi sirlemonhead
OK I have revisited the custom maps I indicated were causing popping/crackling on enhanced (treble & bass) audio settings for reverb effects. When run at default sound settings (as noted I run VIA HD Audio) there is no such problem.
FYI, attached is location on Reactor custom skirmish map where the crackling does occur for enhanced treble/bass.

Finally posted a review of AVP Gold at GameSpot ... perhaps a few more visitors will come here after reading review (if anyone looks at reviews of older games) and participate in identifying fixes needed that haven't been dealt with so far. 😀

Thanks sirlemonhead for making this game accessible to more of us! 😀

Thanks for that. I think I gave you the wrong build - the one without fixed menus :p
Thanks for all your help, you've really motivated me to go back and make things better 😀
I don't think the HUD text thing is an Nvidia issue actually, I think it's just not happening on my ATI card for whatever reason. It's obviously a pain to fix when you don't have easy access to an Nvidia card!
freespace 2 had a similar text problem i think the problem was related to D3DTextureOrigin.
Guardian of the Sacred Five Terabyte's of Gaming Goodness
Yeah it seems to happen on the capital 'P' and lowercase o letters. It's sampling some of the letters/symbols above it in the sprite sheet. Just wonky texturecoordinates 😀
Could you test http://homepage.eircom.net/~duncandsl/avp/AvP … d_font_test.zip for me? It's hopefully got a fixed HUD font and I've turned on filtering so the text should look a bit cleaner now. Let me know if there's any problems!
Hi sirlemonhead
OK, quite a few things fixed in this one:
1) Marine HUD looks great, no text "halo" issues. 10/10
2) ESC accessed character key config menus all aligned and inside rectangle but strange "moving" image at top (sometimes seen as single colour or as a "moving background" above "Use these settings" text) for all characters. Image above text effect observed for missions and skirmish mode when accessed via ESC. 9/10
3) ESC menu itself now a good sized font (not too small and not too big). 10/10
4) ESC accessed audio/graphic settings perfectly aligned. 10/10
A few things also messed up:
1) Name of mission on main mission pages is now left justified for all characters and missions.
2) Sometimes game will "lock up" (ie freeze on main mission page)before starting if up or down arrow keys pressed to select difficulty before hitting Enter button to start. Seems a bit random, but noticed for predator and marine. Needs Ctrl-Alt-Del or hard reset to escape.
Hope that helps. 😀

Hi,
Yeah i'm aware of the weird moving colour on the text at the top of the menus. It's where the large moving cloud effect font is meant to go - I just haven't implemented it yet as i'm not actually sure if i'll bother or not.
I'm seeing the same left alignment of the mission name text on the original game (well, the Steam version so I could have broke it before..) are you sure this isn't the intended behaviour? I wouldn't be sure myself.
I can't recreate that lock up at all. I need to pick Predator or Marine and then use the up and down arrows to scroll through the difficulty levels to make the game freeze up?
Errrr, yup I just went back a few versions of avpx.exe and you are right the text was always left justified ... for some reason I thought it was centred. 😦
Cannot get original avp.exe to run to see if it is originally centred ... unless I reinstall AVP Gold from scratch ... maybe on the weekend? I probably need to do this as I have been simply adding the updated installs you have posted to the previous which may be messing stuff up anyway?
UPDATE: I have uninstalled AVP Gold just now ... can you please send link(s) for the latest/best installer to use together with the Marine Hud font fix exe when I reinstall over Easter long weekend and test all again.
Humble pie being eaten ... the "lock up" occurs for me on a new profile which I tested the HUD fix update on at the Tutorial level and I automatically hit the up/down arrow to change difficulty even though no alternative showing 😅 rather than hit Enter straight away. It's obviously registering something but then obviously with nothing selected it crashes when Enter pressed. It works fine with the two/three unlocked difficulty choices active in the other player profile. This might account for the perceived randomness. Sorry. 😊

It still shouldn't crash. Could you zip up and send me your profile and i'll look into it for you?
sirlemonhead, can you please advise for my reinstall of AVP Gold ... which are the latest installer and/or exe files I should be using or provide links to them.

Hi sirlemonhead,
Superb! Played for a few hours across a range of missions and skirmish games with your latest installer version (on top of a clean AVP Gold re-install) in your last post above. Works a treat, sound, lighting, HUDs all good.
All seems fine to me now. I would suggest you place this installer version on your http://homepage.eircom.net/~duncandsl/avp/ webpage as it is the latest and best so far with all issues identifed (so far) addressed. 😀
...
BTW, after installing again tried running "unfixed" AVP Gold (avp.exe) and checked that mission name on main menus is indeed left justifed in the original ... might look better centred, but that's just me. 😐 Also cannot reproduce the crash I noticed earlier now. 😖

Yeah I couldn't reproduce that crash either :\ I'll stick the new version up soon. Thanks again 😀
I should have done a search for AVP on here much earlier.
It was only by going round the houses that I found sirlemonhead's avp fix and what a great job too!
The game scares the hell out of me, but that's not really the point.
Just need to get the music sorted and it's done.
My version isn't the gold, it's the original CD's and I was wondering if anything can be done about the 'saves left' IE limited.
The official patch is supposed to have given unlimited saves, but I'm assuming that the avpx overwrites that patch.

Should be possible (I haven't tested it in a while though)
Find your AvP config file (usually in C:\Users\YourUsernameHere\Documents\My Games\Aliens versus Predator\AliensVsPredator.cfg
Edit that and change the line
UnlimitedSaves = false
to
UnlimitedSaves = true
