I'm using air to cool this monster, it's good if U have enough Heatpipes and a poweful fan.
Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme with Delta FFB1212EHE (at ~60% fan speed) 😉

Pentium 4's 65nm are all great OC'ers it's the 90nm ones that are hot as hell.

Other than that, was kinda surprized that 12GB RAM setup worked even after OC 😀
LGA 775 still amazes me sometimes...

4.8 GHz is nice accomplishment, on the other hand performance will be very poor anyway... pretty much any C2D will crush it.

Btw - is it possible to run 16GB DDR3 (4x4GB) on P35 board? I guess it might work.

The image of the interior cames from the web, mine is identical except for the fact that it only has one 250gb HD.
It's a pretty nice machine, but probably I'll end keeping the case, after repairing and modding it, and selling the internals (I'm a heathen, I know 🤣 )

Yesterday I decided to install Solaris in this machine. One would think that installing Solaris in a Sun machine would be, at least, straightforward... think again 🤣 . Actually, installing solaris wasn't that hard; getting the installation dvd to boot was a different matter. Apparently, there's an obscure bug in some Sun x86 machines (including, of course, mine 😢 ) that precludes solaris dvd to boot from a pata drive... and since the computer is supposed to have only this optical drive I have to mcgyver a sata drive I have lying around to finally boot the dvd and install the OS.

Also, an unregistered solaris in a domestic enviroment is pretty much useless, but hey, it was fun (in a nearly masochistic way 🤣 )

In practice, Core 2 Duo with 2MB of L2 will need at least 2,8GHz clock to beat this thing (if HT works like it should may be over that) 😀
Pentium Dual Core's with 1MB will need over 3GHz 😉

Well if 12GB worked (in 2x2 + 4x4 configuration), there is big chance that 16GB will work as well (I don't have 4x4GB set to check for sure tho 🙁).
Crucial thing is Dual Sided RAM - U need set of RAM with 16 x 256MB chips on each module.

PS. Stability of RAM is affected by ammount of modules/capacity U install.
In my case 2x2GB vs. 4x2GB = CL6 vs. CL8 (to make it stable at same freqency).

Bought weird bundle just because of this:
Zotac GTX 285 1gb(i can't perceive 200 series as retro,so i post it here)
Quick test shows it works (and never was repaired or opened b4 as there was sticker on screw)
But no S-Video and no relief on cover,that was on palit,that i owned back in 2010, i feel kinda fooled with cheap version 😒

Also in bundle was i3 540,3 different 2gb sticks of ddr3 and brand new asus p8h61 evo with cracked pcie x16 slot,but all pins ok and it works

I'm also transferring the old GTX 670 to the PC hooked up to the TV. Additionally, I decided to upgrade the i3-2100T with something a bit more powerful:

Though I think I may need to upgrade the power supply now... It seems stable now, but I had one instance where it didn't boot that was 'fixed' by unhooking the mechanical hard drive. And then it stayed fixed after I hooked it back up... somehow.

They are actually 4GB, but the last .5 GB has very small bandwidth and games start slowing down and stuttering if that last .5 is being used.

It's been tested. Actual full screen games can not access more than 3.5 GB of the card's ram, and the extra 512 MB is used for "texture acceleration" or what ever the drivers do with it. But games can not access it. This is hence the lawsuit that sprang up.

Good to know, but not something that I'm particularly worried about. I just wanted something better than the 670, as I found I wasn't getting full 60 fps at 2560 x 1600 in the new UT pre-alpha. And that's unacceptable for UT 🤣

Plus I needed an excuse to give my other machine a hand-me-down upgrade too.

Unless this game refuses to run with less than 4 threads detected (which is possible but usually can be patched), then sure... C2D will run it and with some OC even defeat PD EE.

I didn't really benchmark overclocked 965EE... but I think the gap between D945 and E6600 (both stock) in gaming performance is so huge that OC and HT can hardly close it. GTA IV can utilize 4 cores as well, lets do some math.
19 fps avg for D945 @ 3.4GHz, so +41% for OC and +20% for HT (best case scenario) = 32.15 fps - 4.8GHz PD EE. This includes linear frequency scaling and optimal HT utilisation... which obviously rarely occurs in real world. So let's say 4.8GHz PD EE is equal to 2.4GHz C2D. E6600 can be overclocked by 40% easily, this makes it almost 40 fps in GTA IV. 😀

Not all C2D's have L2 4MB (there are 2MB, and 3MB versions as well), also - U will have to OC most of them to beat 4,9GHz on that PXE 😜
Still - I'm not saying Core 2 Duo CAN'T beat PXE, im just saying it makes it a little bit more difficult than usual.

Actually, Hyper Threading per core is +20%, so with two cores - u can get up to 40% in best-case scenario vs. Single Thread (Cinebench R15 : LINK) 😉

PS. FSB speed was overclocked by over 50% (so scaling can be better than pure clock speed difference in this case).

In this case (GTA) C2D E6300 (2MB L2) scores 23.2 fps. So smaller L2 means no performance penalty here. E6600 is 26% faster while having 29% higher frequency 😈

Also I think overclocking C2D to 3+GHz is much easier than pushing Presler to almost 5 GHz. 😀

Overclocking C2D is easy and they all pretty much will do 3ghz at the drop of a hat, getting to 4ghz or higher was the tricky part. I once had a Q8200 that I had pushed to around 3.2ghz while being under volted on a XFX780i, the downside was that the board was a real power hog more than even the cpu was.

Yes, its design is clearly aimed at gamer kids, and it looks terrible (not as bad as the earlier Sniper series boards though), but hardware wise it's a great board in my opinion, basically they've done all the right choices with the integrated hardware if you ask me. There's really nothing wrong or bad I can find at least. Gotta love the PS/2 keyboard/mouse connector and the PCI slot, it's kinda hard to find modern boards with those, and they'll allow me to get serious with the latency hunt. Also, it frees up my old Sabertooth Z77 board for use in my secondary computer 😀

Apparently it overclocks quite well too, even though it's not specifically aimed at overclocking.

On that note, even though the integrated sound chipset definitely is good enough for me, I'll have to pick up the best possible PCI sound card with Windows 10 support just for the hell of it. Any suggestions?

Yes, its design is clearly aimed at gamer kids, and it looks terrible (not as bad as the earlier Sniper series boards though), but hardware wise it's a great board in my opinion, basically they've done all the right choices with the integrated hardware if you ask me. I have a Gigabyte G1.Sniper 2 Z68 board. Although it looks like a carnival it's one of the best motherboards I ever used, with the BIOS installed that is as the UEFI is a clown nosed piece of crap put together by carnival people.

It takes my i7 2600K to 5GHz without breaking a sweat and even 5.2GHz for benching, all with air cooling. At the moment though the board has the UEFI installed and a i7 3770 non K @ 4.1, it's one of my reserve systems.

Wow, that's quite impressive! I'll just hope the Sniper 3 is as good, gonna delid my i7 3770k and overclock it as far as I can once I've installed the new board. With some luck the UEFI is better too, it must really have been in its early stages when your board was made 😀

The Gigabyte G1.Sniper 2 was made for BIOS and Sandy Bridge, the UEFI is needed to control the multipliers on Ivy Bridge but it breaks the voltage control completly for all CPUs and wont allow for Sandy Bridge overclocking at all.

I used the system the summer 2014 when it was really hot here, my weak AC could not handle the heat from my usual main system. The i7 3770 @ 4.1 running Prime95 used 1/3 of the power my main system gobbles up when idle. 😁
