I am trying to install Detective Chess (downloaded from http://bindweed.com/det/det.htm ) on my Windows 7 PC, but when I run the setup.exe file I get the error message:

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

I'm told it does run under Windows 7 (and a search on Google confirms this), and the reason for it's refusal to run (well, even install) on my system is probably down to my PC and Windows 7 being 64-bit (my PC is an AMD Athlon II X2 250 3GHz 64bit, and my Windows 7 is 64 bit too). Is the fact that my PC and Windows are 64 bit likely to be the cause of the problem, and how can I get around this to run the program on my PC?

I know DOSBox would do it, but Detective Chess needs Windows to run, so I'd have to install Win3.1 as well, which I don't have).

Thanks for any answers.

It looks like a 16-bit app designed to run under Win 3.1x. The 64-bit versions of XP, Vista and Windows 7 don't support such apps.

You could try running it under a 32-bit Windows OS instead (i.e. just install Win95 under DOSBox). Additionally you could also try running it using the Windows XP Mode add-on with Virtual PC.
