I got around to hooking up my IDE optical drive for cd audio in Windows 98, since I previously bought the wrong style cd audio connector. After trying out the new connector and getting no cd audio in Windows, I discovered that the drive doesn't support it even though it has the pins. The digital output option over IDE is grayed out, so I guess the drive doesn't support that either.
Since I've already spent way too much money just to get background music working in games, how can I be absolutely sure a drive will support cd audio without being able to test it beforehand? Is there a date when manufacturers stopped supporting it? Ideally it would be something readily available on ebay (maybe some dell oem drive?) and new enough that I wouldn't have to worry about other potential issues.
The cable I have is wired RGGL (Red, Black, None, White) for the optical drive if some aren't compatible with that.
