Some other options to check out :

Assign IRQ for USB/VGA
These fields allow you to enable or disable the IRQ for USB and VGA.
By default, these fields are enabled.

PNP OS Installed
This field allows you to specify if the operating system installed in your
system is plug and play aware.
Note: Operating systems such as DOS, OS/2, and Windows 3.x do not
use PnP.

Resources Controlled by
This PnP BIOS can configure all of the boot and compatible devices
automatically. However, this capability needs you to use a PnP operating
system such as Windows 95. The default value is Manual.

Reading up a bit more it seems my issues on 98/ME may be something to do with 98/ME not doing IRQ resource sharing very well ? .. is there a work around for this specifically ?

Is there an option for APIC in th the BIOS ? Might want to try toggliing that .

I think my Motherboard is way to old to even have that option, its a Super Socket 7 board ..

Any other possible workarounds perhaps or tips or whatever ?

So I maybe should try installing ME with PnP disabled compleatly ?

I would try setting "Resources Controlled by" to auto and "PNP OS Installed" to yes and then rebooting

That is what I had it set at and had all the problems, So i have turned those off and also turned of IRQ for VGA to, I dont know if this will help or not but at this point it cant hurt to try..

Turning all PnP and VGA IRQ off did nothing to help, also making a new hardware profile did not allow my to change any IRQs in device manager ether.

You should be able to reserve IRQs for PCI in the BIOS . Assigning as many IRQs as possible to PCI to avoid/minimize sharing might be something to try .

Tried that, also tried copying a certain driver file for USB2.0from a XP install to the ME install on a hunch that that may help.. it did, for about 5 mins then the system locked up.

At this point I am looking I think to move on to a Intel chipset Slot 1 board and CPU, and maybe even a different USB2.0 card, NEC rather then VIA..

Because VIA is a trash fire and I am done with it.

If you can find a SLOT1 440BX board you should be gold, they're really stable, or even a Skt370/Athlon/Athlon XP(462)/P4(478) board should do the trick and a decent upgrade from the socket 7 side of things.

Hope you have better luck with your next attempt 😁

Update again..

Short version is:

Gave up on USB2.0.

Have managed to get the USB 1.0 onboard working fine however ? even with the fancy USB3.0 Switch I have for "poor mans KVM" which is pretty nice.

How I did this was I "borrowed" USB related files from the NUSB installer and Windows XP and copied them into a fresh Win ME install.

especially the unofficial Service Pack should not be installed, it's a piece of crap.

What makes you say that? Are you talking about the extended features or the barebones bugfixes/service pack part of it?
