I like using a Savage4 alongside a Voodoo 2 or SLI config in Pentium II systems because the Savage card is one of the better AGP cards for DOS.

I have this exact setup in one of my 440BX machines.

However my card is faulty. It only works when underclocked by about 15% (someone on this forum told me how to do this). Without this, the card malfunctions with graphical artefacts on screen. Can this be repaired I wonder?

I also cannot get MeTaL to work in Unreal Tournament (in Windows 98 SE). The computer just crashes.

Have you tried repasting the heat sink and adding a fan? Cause that would like it might be over heating and when you under clock it it'll produce less heat. I had my GeForce 4 mx460 do that when I first got it and all I did was change the thermal paste And it's been perfect ever since.

You've made me curious now. I haven't messed with this machine for years but I'm going to get it out and have a look.

ETA: Update on this. I haven't replaced the paste but have mounted a powerful fan blowing air onto the card. Heat sink temperature now stays under 30 degrees C. I can now play Unreal and Unreal Tournament at stock speed using MeTaL without issue. Other tested games run well in DirectX. However both 3DMark2000 and 3DMark2001 SE crash when run. (3DMark 99 is OK). Clearly there is still something wrong besides temperature.

ETA2: I have removed the Voodoo card and 3Dfx drivers. The S3 driver I am using is 4.12.01.8226 (82031w9xrowlogo.zip). I also have S3Tweak installed but card is running at stock speed.

Is this too much voodoo?

Most people collect the best of the best leaving the oddball stuff to be recycled. I have a Savage 4 in my collection just because it is different and last of the S3 line, but it is on the shelf at the moment.

Its not the last..
There is S3 DeltaChrome S4 and S8 for AGP, also Chrome S18, S25 and S27, Chrome 400 and Chrome 500 Series which support even MultiChrome (Like SLI) and DirectX 10.1.

Not to mention the Savage 2000, the immediate successor to the Savage 4, which was the last of S3's chips as an independent company.

When LGR reviewed it, he mentioned that Midtown Madness game ran flawless on it, even better than on the Voodoo 3 3000. Remembering I played that game in Software mode, the S3 Savage 4 would've been nice for the era.

It's a Direct3D game. Like I said, it's a great companion to Vooodoo 2 systems for Direct3D.
