Yes, with MPXPLAY. You'll need a least a fast 486 as minimum for playing high bitrate MP3 files.

druaga1 used this app in his netbook mp3 playback machine

i dont think the spectrum analyzer would really be much of drain on top of decoding the MP3. there are command line parameters where you can disable that anyway.

-f0 no screen output
-FF displays only the current playback position and the actual file name
-FL Displays only one row of output
-v Verbose mode (including media information, ID3 label information, when specifying-F0,-FF,-FL options)
-fe Full Screen playlist editor (no spectral simulators and browsers)

How that nothing happens?

If you open MPXPLAY by default without any parameters you will get a TUI where you must find the directory where the MP3 files are located. You may also need to change the default view if you opened this way for the first time.

You also must download the DOS extender depending which version are you using such as DOS/32A or DOS/4G (this one is also on the very same site where you download MPXPLAY around "Other util" section).

Did you make sure that you downloaded the corresponding DOS extender?

I don't see it on the "C:\MPXP165D" path. If it is the DOS/4G version download it from this link (from MPXPLAY website) and for the DOS/32 version you can download DOS/32A here by selecting the binary distribution. You must extract DOS4G.EXE or DOS32A.EXE into the MPXPLAY path.

BTW, I suggest doing a new post instead of editing (useful if you just posted it and want to quickly correct something or add more info) for new messages to be more noticeable.

Does the computer has motherboard cache installed on it? It's not normal to take 20 min for MPXPLAY to load.

yes it has ! maybe the program doesnt like compactflash cards ? or maybe its loading so slow because it doesnt like soundblaster pro 2 cards
games are loading fast no problems at all
the compact flash card is a real card not a fake from ebay or aliexpress

Very unlikely that the SB Pro2 card is causing that, I have one of these cards installed on a old computer.

Do you also use SMARTDRV or not?

GoTek is just a floppy emulator (I don't think that is the the problem either as I have one too but not using it). Try booting the computer without anything extra on CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT except the HIMEM.SYS, SB Pro mixer settings, BLASTER and PATH environment.

Do you have another computer with DOS support to check this?

Since you aren't using SMARTDRV, try increasing BUFFERS to 20 or 30 and FILES to 40 in CONFIG.SYS:

BUFFERS=20
FILES=40

tried that on both my p1 and 486 changes nothing before the program starts the speakers give a popping sound like 4 times
i think its a program bug or something
p1 takes about 1 min to load
486 about 7 min
