Microsoft has no own Ideas and just adapts Styles of other UIs.

It doesn't really matter who copies who, the important part is whether the (graphical) user interface works.
With windows (also true for some other systems) one is stuck with a "one size fits all" gui, that's the biggest drawback in my opinion.

That makes me wonder: Does Win 11 still support booting via BIOS/MBR?
I know of a few friends that run Win 10 x64 on dated PCs from the mid/late 2000s.

But if Win XI doesn't support that anymore (unless hacked to work with Win 10 loader),
then that alone would be a nogo for old PCs, even if they met the new requirements (TPM2, certain CPU instructions).

And considering that UEFI boot became common in the early-mid 2010s,
then the new strict hardware requirements aren't that strict, anyway.

Currently, supported PC hardware that's said to be Win 11 compatible
can be 5 years "old", at best.
So we're at 2017/2016, which is close to the ~ 2011-2015 years in which the first PCs with UEFI (64-Bit UEFI, full implementation) came out.

OS works fine with MBR and no UEFI, installer does not.
I'm not aware of any loaders needed. What has been out there is either deleting a .dll, switching out install.wim and also a register key that even Microsoft has published.

what didn't work in windows 10 definitely won't work in windows 11 either, the question is how many things that did work in windows 10 won't work in windows 11 😉

MS has revealed a simple registry key that will allow computers running Windows 10 to upgrade to Windows 11 even if the TPM 2.0 or CPU requirements are not met. Still supposedly have to have at least TPM 1.2 but that goes back a lot further.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup and then right-click the main panel and create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with a name of AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU and set its value to 1.

There hasn't to my knowledge been any major compatibility differences between all Windows 8 & 10 versions though.

I had Dune 2000 that stopped working without Windows 9X Compatibility mode after the Creators' Update. Before, only Admin mode was required (that, and ddrawCompat).
(I really need to use the fan patch for that game anyway, instead).
But that's the only problem that I recall. Overall, since Windows 8 added the 8 BPP compat option, Windows is better than Windows 7 for old games, in my experience.

I stopped reading as soon as I saw the privacy concerned person was using Windows 7, and was considering to switch to macOS.

I would consider Windows 11 equally a privacy nightmare as any internet connected, closed source OS .

Why would you read a podcast? MP3 is at the top 😉
Open source is better, but some like Ubuntu have their own privacy problems.

That's right, I think. And unsigned 32-Bit drivers, I assume.

Gratefully, we have DOSBox which can run Windows 3.1x. 👍
Compatibility of those is much much better to what the old NTVDM had to offer in the past years.
NTVDM was rather decaying after Windows 7, IMHO.

Another alternative nowadays is OTVDM/WineVDM.
It has its shortcomings (no DOS programs, no TWAIN driver support), but at least make Windows 3.x programs run seamlessly on Windows 64-Bit.

I think running win xp in some virtual machine may allow up to 8k for win3.1 games
