Been on my NES doing the first Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) and posting to youtube. I plan to record all 4. II and III will be my first time completing them. Im the most seasoned at 1 I and IV.
Ive also been doing a bunch of Random Atari 2600 games while I tune up to do some DOS/Windows stuff in the near future.
Thinking Ill do with commentary the first time, then second+ runs without for people that prefer thr game by itself. Plus thinking of doing some kind of 10 hour AMSR dark screen compilation of gameplay footage like people use to sleep to.
For the first Dragon Quest trilogy, I would personally recommend the Gameboy Color ports over the originals. The screen is smaller so you can't see as much of the environment at once, but you level up much more quickly, which significantly cuts down on the forced grinding and makes them far less tedious to play (the script translation is also slightly closer to the Japanese original but this is less of a big deal since both translations are fine). I'm still a little annoyed that so many modern ports/remakes are based on the original's balancing and not this streamlined port, especially when the obscene amount of level grinding was implemented only to make it harder to beat within a rental period.
That said, I personally think 3 is the only one of the trilogy that actually holds up at all nowadays, even with an improved leveling curve.
To each his own. I've not touched any of the newer games and remakes yet except Dragon Quest Builders for the PS4 in the last couple of years because I was curious, quite liked that one, sort of a Dragon Quest/Minecraft crossover. I also like grinding quite a bit because it helps me understand how the characters work, and I find it somewhat relaxing for some reason.
This playthrough I've been doing with the NES Dragon Warrior has been interesting because I started basically last month and I've almost completed it. I've been releasing a part every Sunday, I'm up to Part 12 but only at Part 5 released on my channel, 🤣. I've already got everything except Erdrick's sword and already have fared Charlock castle a good chunk of the way, all that's left is to get the sword and kill the Dragon Lord.
The worst part of the second game will probably be the Cave to Rhone and the endless amount of videos that will be just grinding upon grinding against enemies that cast beat and sacrifice near the end. TBH it's not as bad as people claim though, I already have a savegame there.
Dragon Warrior III looks like a long one for me, because it's so open-ended and complex compared to any of the others with the whole class changes, 2 worlds, and all those side quests. I've had that cart 20 years now and still have not beat it and still have the Save on it that I started when I was 21.
Dragon Warrior IV was the first one I played all the way through, and I just bought the cart last year. That one seems to be more like the Game Boy versions of I&II by my description. It's a lot less grindy, the story progresses faster, it's a bit more linear than III but less-so than I or II. Shame it's such a rare and expensive NES cart though, but it helped me clean house when I traded "up" to it.
