Promise TX4 Sata II PCI Card Windows 95/98/ME Driver.

It seems to be a common misconception that this card has no support for 9x/ME

This is not true. I keep meaning to post this but keep forgetting. I’ve encountered it many times where people said it couldn’t be done.

I’ll update this post with the driver when I get home, but I confirmed it again the other day that indeed it is supported.

Edit: here is what I got.

Sil3114 does that also compatible with R. LOEW high capacity patch for an up to 2tb bootable single partition fat32 disk on dos windows but I don't know if dos itself will read and write the last sector of 2TB?

I've tried with Promise SATA300 TX4 card. It works, win98 installs fine, I even pointed it at unzipped latest drivers from promise site and it "installed" something, device in device manager got it's proper name, but speed was 3-4 MB/s all accross the board. Same computer with Via VT6421A card goes up to 100 MB/s.

When I opened inf file from these drivers I've noticed that win9x section is commented out, it has only dlls for NT, 2k and XP. Yet it "installs" something but it seems to work only in compatibility mode.

Same card with same SSD on WinXP achieves around 120 MB/s on same configuration.

Lemme do some benchmarks later.

9x has a habit of disabling dma. Did you check that?

I've looked at the driver package for 9x as well. All it does is name the device. Nothing actually gets installed.

Heh, so it’s like a half driver? Lol. Weird..

Gotta check this out when I get home.

I’m definitely gonna run a speed test.

id say the reason people think that is promise website don't have a windows 9x driver listed for it. the oldest os they provide a driver for on there websites is windows 2000.

they only officially provide 9x drivers for the older Sata 150 tx2/tx4 cards.

I think there's something wrong there. Here's a Promise S150 TX2, Asus TXP4, Win98SE, K6-3+ @ 500 MHz, 256 megabytes of memory, and a Crucial 120 gigabyte SSD:

Here's the same system using the IDE port with a SATA to IDE adapter.

that's slow as balls. an old ide HD would be quicker speeds then that.

Hd tach doesn’t work on ME, what version is that benchmark, got a link? I tried a newer version of your benchmark but it didn’t work either.

It doesn’t feel slow though, in fact it feels pretty snappy…

Edit: found it: version 2.41

Nothing wrong, as mentioned, SATA II (SATA300 series) cards don't have Win98 drivers. This is basically DOS compatibility mode.

Same SSD on same configuration except using Via VT6421A SATA card goes up to 90 MB/s.

I prefer SATA drives, mostly because there's less noise. And because it's questionable how much life these old IDE drives have in them. I have 7-8 of them. HDDs I pulled out of old XBox' are in best condition for some reason. Only downside is only 10 GB capacity. Unless you connect them on 486, then in most cases that's too much 🤣.

I think I downloaded it from Philc's site. Didn't actually paid attention to version 🤔.

I wouldn't be surprised if your numbers are due to better CPU, while test is running computer is basically frozen. It's all on CPU and my P233 can't do it faster.

Yesterday I tried to use SATA150 TX4 drivers and mod them so it would install on SATA300 TX4. Well, it ended up as expected. Today I have to reinstall Win98 🤣.

Here: I did a quick test. It’s not apples to apples but I simulated about the speed of your 233mmx using central tweaking unit. (I disabled the k6 l2 on die also btw)

You are right about the cursor being a slide show. But performance isn’t too bad. Still peaking at around 30mb/sec read

As you say, the cpu is playing a huge role here.

I wonder what’s going on with solo’s score…?

Here is the test again, but settings all maxed out on central tweaking unit. (For reference)

tweaking dma might work theres docuentation for 9x and 2k / xp a tool called xsetup from major geeks website can do it for you on 2k / xp but SATA II is 300 max you need SATA III for 600 max no SATA III win9x i've found so far I wonder if R. Loews drivers would help. For maximum velocity I recommend 4 disk raid 0 to obtain maximum throughput.

Issue here is lack od Win9x drivers for Promise SATA300 TX4 card, not maxing out speed.

90 MB/s I get on VT6421A is more than enough for P233 MMX and Win9x. But using Promise SATA300 TX4 card is different matter because of lack of Win9x drivers. You can install ones from Promise website, although they're Win2k/XP, but there won't be any improvement because it just "names" it, it doesn't actually install any drivers, so it ends up working in compatibility mode which is slow.
