Hi,

i want to show up a small project i`m working on in the past weeks if i have some free time beside my non Computer related Job.

This is acoustic feedback for SSDs.

Prototype HDD Clicker v0.1

The attachment clicker4.jpg is no longer available

Fucking brilliant mate !

Can it do other HDD sounds or is it limited to standard IDE HDD sound ?

Would be cool to have a SSD sound like a MFM or RLL drive both of which sound amazing for a retro rig.

Very cool device!

Maybe in a "2.0 version": add the hard drive spinning sound and also possibility to "adjust" sound properties of spinning/clicks etc? 😁

Is there a chance you will make the board and BOM for the prototype version available? I want to build some for my PCs and the THT version is a lot more suitable for my skill level..

nice, gonna buy that for sure! 😁
does it have an on/off button? will it be able to simulate different hdd models (with different sounds)? why does it have power led out? 😀

Lets you connect the HDD led to it from the PC case since you cant see the onboard one when the case is closed.

It's got HDD LED out and power LED out. I've actually got one Socket 7 system that doesn't have a power LED header, so I'd make use of this.

Is it possible to replace the buzzer with a relay? I want it to sound LOUD 😂

Good and intelligent question. 👍
Attaching a low-power relay directly (with anti-parallel diode ofc) was one of my personal ideas, too.

Edit: Next was using a stepper motor via transistor driver+counter ics, for that that squeaky sound.
But an electronic solution like this would be preferable, maybe.

There is no SpinUp Sound.
Buzzer isnt made for sounds with deeps.

It would require a bigger speaker and some big iron mcu with few kb more.
Even a arduino is too small. It only holds 2,8s Audio at 11Khz.
Playing Spinup, Spinning Sound and Clicks would require some Sort of mixing, and a decent Speaker
At least some small ARM Cortex.

Sorry for grammatical errors, i`m not native english speaker.

This is an awesome idea!

While I admittedly prefer solid state to avoid the low frequency hum of mechanical hard drives, I do kind of miss the head seeking sounds. It was always reassuring to have that audio feedback when waiting for the game to load something.

Can we change the tone and style of the clicks? My ideal would be a 120mb quantum click

What about spin up sounds?

Spin down sound from a capacitor storage?

Optional whirring sound?

Volume for each

Mute button? (Turbo?)

Maybe as a 2.5” size pcb we can mount on a 3.5”/5-1/4” adapter

Anyway,
Maybe ideas for next version 😀

This one looks sweet already!
