Yeah 3.8 ghz P4s are pricey because they are the highest clocked ones out of the series... 4.0 ghz was canceled.... spare parts builds are fun... sounds like a good rainy day project to me.

The 661 is a great CPU and that 670 3.8Ghz model is one of the Presshot versions which I cant recommend buying even if it was cheap.

Just bump the 661 to 3.8, you'll still have a better CPU than the Presshot model, I ran mine at 4.0 for ages.

EDIT - A 430 can be obtained for about $13 Canadian on ebay with shipping. The 420 CPU itself is cheap but shipping is like $60+ for the two I can find.

same cpu, just different multiplier lock, mine did 340MHz fsb with 1.45V on GA-965P-DS3. Used it all the way to 2014.

I found a 420 from the same seller as the 430 for the same price so I ordered one. 🤣

I don't know why I do these things sometimes.

Did some quick playing around with the FSB and so far the CPU seems stable at 4.19.

Noticeable gains in 3dmark05 and UT2003 results.

Cedar Mill can go up to 4.5Ghz relatively easy. After that, required voltage rise will lead to quite high TDP, but 5Ghz is totally possible on air.

Saying P4 is overkill for WinXP is a bit overkill by itself 😀

Cedar Mills are very speed comparative with earlier P4's, they didn't gain speed during 2004-2006 much at all. My one step below 651 started to get CPU bottlenecked with some games from 2004 with a 9800 GTX+, you are leaving a lot of GPU speed on the table with those kinds of cards.

If we are being fair here the 9800GTX+ GPU is a Janurary 2009 GPU so its no surprise that the last of the Pentium4 CPUs cant keep up with it, A better match for the 651/661 would be a 6800 Ultra or a 7800 series GPU, in the OPs case they are simply removing the GPU being a bottleneck from their testing to get a better view of what that P4 can actually do when unrestrained.

That said .. the GT710 they are going to test with .. what a fucking piece of shit ...id rather throw a FX5200 64bit GPU in there than ever touch a GT710.

Of course, that's why I've got 6800 GT in there now. I just had the 9800 GTX+ until I found a more suitable card that didn't cost arm and a leg. I also do realise it's just for fun, I was just amused by the whole P4 overkill thing.

Definitely for fun, hence the "silly overkill" title.

I just wanted fastest P4 I could put together without really spending any money.

I was using a 3.06 with 1.5GB of 1066 RDRAM and a Quadro FX3000 for graphics but it irked me that it was unstable with the full 2GB of 1066 memory, so I put together this silly machine to replace it.

4.68 boots into windows with 1.4v vcore, it does bluescreen crash when trying to run anything CPU intensive though.

4.75 doesn't finish booting windows and gets an IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL bluescreen.

It's so silly having a p4 at this clockspeed, youtube is very usable now! (at 720P, 1080P is a no)

Should I go much higher on the cpu voltage? I didn't play around with these processors much back in the day, don't know what their limits really are.

You can push it around 1.5v safely, if cooler is capable enough. Heat dissipation won't be pretty and you need to stay below 70C.

Well I have fairly chunky tower cooler on there, I'll see what happens with 1.5v!
