Oh boy. This went worse than I expected. So, in my first proper windows 98 SE build, I am faced with a string of issues with sound and individual games(all of which are DOS, as windows games run fine so far)
My specs are as follows
Motherboard-QDI advanced 10t
CPU-Pentium III 1000mhz
GPU-3dfx VooDoo3 2000
Soundcard-SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 CT4830 PCI+Vibra16 ISA
Hard disk-WD800 80gb
RAM-TwinMOS 256MB
OS-Windows 98 SE
The sound driver was downloaded from Vogons drivers here: http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=804
First issue is that windows sounds work, but I got no sound in games and no sound in videos. For example, if I get a game that has some promotional videos from other games on the disc, the video's got no sound. Sole exception to this rule(but only just) is Nuclear strike, who's music works during gameplay. And that's basically it with this. Originally I intended to used an SB0220, but I've read somewhere that it had issues with the VIA chipset of the motherboard I use. I also tried to make the onboard sound to work but no dice there either. Maybe I did something wrong with the drivers, I am not really sure.
So now we move on to the games, Individually
DESCENT II
The first game I tried running. It seems to have speed issues. At the highest resolution it goes in slooooooooow moooootioooooooon, while in the lowest itmovesreallyfreakingfast, and I am not really sure, but it might have something to do with the Voodoo3. In regards with the sound, I did not try to recreate it, but I think, right after I started messing with the sound testing and automatic hardware detection, windows seem to started crapping out, with UI elements stop working after I tried to use them.
NASCAR RACING
Man, it's been a while since I last installed a game through floppies, but I digress. Now, Nascar Racing, runs fine, but there is a single issue. When in setup you choose to test the sound the whole system crashes. I tried doing this both in win98 and in DOS mode, and the computer hanged both times.
JANE'S AH-64D LONGBOW
In the case of longbow I can't even run the game. When I try to do so, I get an error about not enough files and buffers and I have to increase them in Config.sys. Of course It doesn't tell me where Config.sys is
The next few games are from a collection called MEGAMEDIA MEGAPAK 4, and they are all on CDs
BLACK KNIGH MARINE STRIKE FIGHTER
When trying to install, I get an error that there is not enough space. Of course I wouldn't be mentioning this if there wasn't 69(😎) Gigabytes available on the hard drive. The game offers the option to run it directly from the disk. But I get an error for not setting up my sound. Of course when I try to do that I get an error that the driver could not be loaded or something like that(regardless of the soundcard I choose). Though strangely at starting up the setup utility I get a message that says that a "BLASTER" environment was detected. Even If I choose no sound the game still refuses to run giving me the same error. I don't know if you see a pattern forming here.
TORNADO OPERATION DESERT STORM
This game will straight up won't run. I get a message that there is not enough space, and that's the jist of it.
DAWN PATROL
Another game from this pack I failed to run. I have to choose some graphics card from an utility to run it, but no option seems to work.
Lastly here's a few issues I got with DOS
-The Disk drive is designated as D:, however when I try to switch to it, DOS tells me it's an invalid drive.
-How do I scroll in DOS?
-It happened once, but there was one time I tried exiting DOS, and it got stuck at restarting windows, and I'd like to prevent this from happening in the future
The Salvaged parts Rig that cost me nothing.
