Hi Guys.

I have problem with my IBM ps/2 model 30 386.
I managed to find Kingston 386now for ps/2. Unfortunately it is for the 50/60 model with PGA socket. I have found adapter PGA/PLCC on french eBay for fair price. And It works.

System boots and the software recognizes the 386 25 MHz processor with a math co-processor.

Problem is with temps. I don't have a proper thermometer, but all the chips are very hot to the touch.

Your thoughts? Faulty board? Adapter? Compatibility issue?

And the solution is simple. install a small fan to circulate air.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

I could do that. The thing is, board starts to smell like electrical burning. Does anyone have kingston 386now? Is it always that hot?

Did it seem like it was new, never used? You do kinda get "The Apple II smell" hot electronics as it outgasses a bit for first use on many things. AMD SXL should be relatively as cool as a cucumber though, barely warm, unless it's heatsoaking from the rest of the board, intel 387s run hot, custom ASICs were probably a process size or two away from bleeding edge and thus not exactly energy sippers.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

I dont think it was new. I will try to extract 387. I dont have proper tool right now.

I managed to take out 387. Unfortunately, nothing has changed. Am386 still gets really hot. But small chip on the bottom (Texas Instruments TIT145XS) is even hotter.

Oh, I forgot something... with being the SX/SXL part, the 386 isn't necessarily being used in lower power SXL mode, the implementation might have been for standard SX meaning it uses about twice the power. So it might get hot, not my finger is sizzling like bacon hot, but maybe as high as "I can only touch it for 2 seconds" hot.

Wow. Thanks. That explains a lot. I would say that TIT145XS LS626 chip is "2 seconds" hot. 386 SX/SXL is bit cooler. But I have thick skin 😀
I guess I'll have to put some heat sinks on them and maybe they'll last.
