Hi

A while ago i got this Aopen CRW5232/ARR CD writer. After pluging it in, the LED lights up for a quarter of a second, then the drive dies. Drive isn't detected at all. Any ideas what might be the cause of this?

You have to inspect the board. Post a photo if you can.

Didn't spot any obviously broken compotents. After a while, The RICOH RL3E804 starts slowly heating up.

First, check the fuse (first pic, top left). Then you'll have to check the mosfets.

You mean L1? It has 1 ohm. Mosfet Q1 has 3.3v on base and Q2 1.89v on base too. No shorts to ground. Also, i was wrong about that RICOH chip. Its getting really warm after a couple of seconds. Any ideas?

It's probably gone bad. These chips aren't supposed to get hot, except for the chip on the left (pic 3).

Is there anything else i can test? Also, are there any similar replacements for that RICOH chip? I can't find anyone selling that exact chip.

I don't think there are anything you can check, this chip basically the heart of the drive, if it got shorted (get so hot when apply power) then you had better find another drive and moving on
you can keep the laser/spindle and use them as replacement part.
