I was going to recommend an Adaptec ACC-9500; while it isn't an especially great cooler, it does have a copper bottom and it works pretty well. More importantly, up until fairly recently they were available on Ebay for a pretty good price, but I just checked and that doesn't seem to be the case anymore (maybe they were new old stock and sold out?). An Athlon 1000 is a hot running CPU, but with good case cooling even a basic Socket A cooler should be fine. If it were me, I would try to find something that has a copper base or plug, and use a premium thermal paste.

Thanks for the advice, I found some AMD OEM heatsinks with the copper core on them; I think that's what I will use; I intended to use Noctua NT-H1 or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut that I have on hand. For the case, I will be running a Lian-li PC-61; I was able to get one for a decent price, and I'll likely replace all the fans with Arctic P8 80mm fans. I'd love some Noctua ones, but that would be a bit pricey for this project.
