I have a dead socket 3 motherboard with a ZIF socket (has a lever allowing easy cpu installation and removal).
I also have a Socket 1 Motherboard that I use for testing (manually push cpu for installation, can sometimes bends pins during removal). The board can use 16mhz-50mhz CPUs due to its replaceable oscillator so I use it often to test 486 CPUs.
A ZIF socket will really help, and will be an outstanding upgrade.

In theory this should work if I cut off the extra socket 3 pins. But is there an issue I am not seeing here?

That's perfectly fine, but removing the Socket ZIF with a heat gun and cleaning up 169 holes, hmm....... It's a painful memory. 😁

thanks, thankfully the socket location is not crowded with other components. Should be able to avoid problems if I dont rush my work.

Its too bad I have to go the extra step and get the socket off another motherboard, but no one sells 1/2/3 zif sockets anywhere.

looks like its a pretty important part of the motherboard to harvest if you are pulling spare parts.

I've removed some soldered 386 CPUs to place them in sockets, it can be done. I used a cheap but decent hot air + preheater station for it. And manual solder sucker to clean the holes.

The main problem with a socket though would be what it's made of - plastic. It's going to get soft and warp I think, it's quite hard to get the temperature just right and for a very short time. If I were to try this I would put some cheap 486 CPU into the socket and clamp it to provide some extra stiffness. The CPU should survive but it's best to assume the worst so put in some cheap SX or something that you won't miss if it does die.
