The only decent looking motherboard I found for p4 was an Asus P5VDC-MX with agp slot, can I run 98 and play some dos game and “newer” games like halo ? Or the Pentium 4 is too much for win98 to be easy on compatibility?
I don't know if you want that board, it's a Via chipset...
Having tried to build a Win98 system on a similar vintage AMD platform with a similar southbridge (maybe not the exact same), all I will say is - go PATA. I went absolutely nowhere while having any SATA devices; turn off the SATA and use all PATA devices and it works fine(ish). 98SE is very, very picky about expecting an IDE controller at particular memory addresses...
So VIA chipsets are trouble, which one should I search? Is SiS chipset good?
VIA chipsets were not that bad; 3 out of 5 of my systems that could run Win98SE were based on VIA chipsets. If you wanted a motherboard with both AGP 8x and full Win9x support after June 2004 -- when Intel announced 915P chipset and LGA 775 socket, along with PCIe and DDR2 support -- then VIA was probably your only choice. Personally I wouldn't recommend SiS chipsets as a target to look for: they were neither common nor particularly good.
On the other hand, I wouldn't recommend Asus P5VDC-MX for Win98SE gaming for another reason: it could only accept a very narrow range of Prescott in 775, arguably the most disliked era of Intel processors (which probably makes it cheaper for purchase today). It could accept neither the older but cooler Northwood (except two very rare Gallatin Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.40 and 3.46), nor the newer and much more efficient Core family.

I have some 775 mobos with e7500 here in my parents ( I think I even have and core2quad) and ddr2 memories and a gt9400, I will try to build it and see if it works fine, but anyway I think I will try to hunt down some p4 and build something similar that a cool guy sended here( my gf liked the ideia and want to build something too) and in my house I have an 4th gen i7, I think I will take this gt9400 and install xp on this i7
Well, if I were you I'd make a complete list of whatever components I already had (especially MB, CPU, and graphic cards) before building another retro rig.
