My rig is here, page 142, first post: Retro Rig Photo Thread

Intel D865GLC motherboard, in case somehow what I see at that link is the same location for others.

I had and SB Live! CT4870 working well in both Windows 98 and DOS. I was hoping to get a improved audio out of this Audigy 2 ZS.

I followed this guide and installed the linked drivers and apps. All looks good in Device Manager.
Guide: Installing Windows 9x and DOS drivers on Audigy cards (version 3.1)

I have it working well in Windows. Main tests so far are Doom and Quake. Music and SFX working well when starting the games within Windows. SFX in Quake sound a bit muffled, but CD music is working.

When I choose the Restart to MS-DOS option in Shutdown menu, or boot directly into DOS, I get trouble from the 2ZS.

SBEGO
-All works as it should - 8-bit, 16-bit and MIDI

Doom
-Music works in all supported modes, SFX give me trouble
-I configure Setup to MIDI for music
-I configure SFX to Sound Blaster, at 220, IRQ 5, DMA 1, 8 effects
-The system hangs at I_StartupTimer() as seen in the Doom Launching pic
-If I change SFX to PC speaker or No Sound, the game launches fine with music and either the crappy PC speaker sound effects or no sound effects, respectively

Quake
-SFX work and sound perfect (better than when running from within Windows). I get no music, however. I have the CD driver loading, as you can see in the "DOS Loading" pic attached. I am able to access the CD drive, all seems okay in that respect.

Autoexec.bat, CTSYN.ini, dos loading and SBEGO screenshots all attached, for scrutiny. CTSYN.ini and dos loading screenshots are stitched together from multiple screenshots. 😀

What am I doing wrong? Would really love to have these running in pure DOS environment - and then probably other games once I have it working faithfully.

Well, after a fresh install of win98 and going through order of install mericulously and particularly installation of the audgy 2 zs, I've got no change in the overall behavior. The sound in both games, albeit launching from within windows, is great. I educated myself on DMXOPTION and the music in doom is now simply stunning. I guess I'm good with it for now, although neither game launches properly in pure DOS. I'm planning to try out some other games from my youth once I beat Doom - AD&D Eye of the Beholder is one that comes immediately to mind, although I believe it isn't too challenging in the area of sound support.
