Hi all,
My current socket 7 setup is built around a Shuttle HOT-569 mobo and a Pentium MMX 200 overclocked at 225 (3 x 75).

That motherboard accepts AMD K6-2 and the FSB can be configured up to 83 Mhz.

I am considering swapping my Pentium MMX for a K6-2. Why? Just because I can...

Now I am confused with regards to which CPU to get because on this page (https://www.pchardwarelinks.com/569_spec.htm) it says : "K6-2 processors faster than 333MHz may draw too much amperage through the motherboard to be considered reliable".

Should I stick to a K6-2 333 @ 66 x 5? Do you think my board would accept a K6-2 450 underclocked at 4.5 x 75 = 337 MHz?

On the other hand I have found evidences of people running K6-2 at 400+ MHz on the very same mainboard (see https://groups.google.com/g/alt.comp.periphs. … Uwn-N7WM4?pli=1) so really not sure what to believe...

Any advice?

Jan has a patched BIOS for that motherboard that adds support for the K6-2/3+ CPUs. They have a lower power draw than a standard K6-2 so that shouldn't be a problem. So you could have it setup with a 500 MHz CPU with 256k of L2 cache if you like.

I430TX chipset can do 83 MHz FSB, so you can use 500 MHz K6-2 CXT, K6-2+ and K6-III+ CPUs (83 MHZ * 6 multi (setting for 2 multi) = 500 MHz). For more info and details look here.

Good advice, maybe I should look for a K6-2+... Much harder to find though...

Some bonus advice. Any K6-2 with CxT core and up will read the 2x multiplier and applies a 6x multiplier.
i.e. 66 X 2 setting will run at 66 X 6 = 400MHz and 83 X 2 will run at 83 X 6 = 500MHz.

Stuck at 10MHz...
